Home on the lake [OPEN as open can be! come visit, Heroes!]
Who: Shunsui Kyouraku and anyone willing to walk half an hour west of Caissa to his new house!
When: a few days after the Grantebryncge Library dungeon!
Where: half an hour to forty-five minutes west of Caissa
What: Shunsui got a house and is going to go try to make it livable!
Rating: None, it's an open house log. He might try to smooch people on the forehead and there could be blood when he tries to decorate, but otherwise we should be good.
OOC note: Kinkaku-ji (the Golden Pavilion) in Kyoto is meant to serve as inspiration, since the house is close to it in style! It's not nearly as big or ornate, though, and probably not...gold.
The home was more than he'd been expecting, even having toured it several times before applying for his permit and making the purchase.
It consisted of three levels and sat on a lake, reminding Shunsui of the Ugendou. That fact made him a bit sad, but it was nice to have all the same! It was a happy yellow color, and he liked the way the sun seemed to make it shine.
The first level consisted of a large kitchen, lounge area, bathroom with large tub and shower, library/reading room and guest room. It had access in several places to the wide deck/porch surrounding the entire house, upon which rested a small sunroom that he was excited to fill with plant life!
The second level housed three bedrooms, of good size with small study nooks in each. While there was only one bathroom shared between the three, it was quite large and rather nice, in his opinion! The bathing and toilet areas were separate, which was nice since that was what he was most familiar with. He did worry since one of the occupants - or at least, so he hoped! - was a young lady, but there was nothing that said she needed to take a room on that floor. They did have plenty!
The third and final level consisted of a master bedroom, a medium sized office, and a bathroom with shower. All three levels boasted balconies with railings, and he'd made sure to outfit those with comfortable chairs and tables to rest drinks or books on!
It had been rather expensive, but Shunsui had been doing many of the jobs he'd found posted in this world, and for all his carefree attitude, he didn't spend a great deal of money on himself. Never had, really, and now that his drinking had all but stopped...well. He did visit restaurants and bakeries regularly, but he'd managed to charm so many of the cooks that he often spent next to nothing anyway!
Once the furniture he'd ordered (simple but of good quality, beds and desks and sofas and tables!) had been delivered and set up, he decided it was time to open the place up to visitors and guests!
The main door was open, and visitors could walk through the garden he'd started to get to the house. There were many refreshments in the sitting area and kitchen, and plenty of space to relax! Including many, many cushions on the floor, both inside and on the dock.

He was hoping that because he didn't take up much space that it would help with things.
In any case, Shin-Ah stepped inside and looked around, holding his carrier in his hands. He looked a little lost and a little amazed at the same time. Like he'd walked into a dream and wasn't sure where reality began despite the fact that all of his was real.
So he was in his new home now. Guess he was there for people to say hi to.
Oh no, how is he so precious
"Hello, Shin-Ah! I'm so glad you decided to join me here. I have a bedroom ready for you up on the third floor, down the hall from my room. There's a bed, a comfortable chair, a desk and some shelving in it for the your things, and a wardrobe for your clothes!
Make yourself at home! There are plenty of treats and drinks in the kitchen, and I can show you around whenever you like."
He didn't want to overwhelm him, after all!
we will never know
"...I...have things? In my room?"
Really? He was given a bed and a chair and a desk and... He was literally allowed to have furniture? Things?
Sorry, Shunsui. He'd literally never been able to have a room to himself that would be made comfortable. The last time he'd had his own room it had literally been nothing but a cave with nothing in it. He hadn't been allowed anything beyond that.
no subject
He wasn't able to stop himself from putting an arm around Shin-Ah's shoulders, not having missed how surprised he was and feeling a bit sad that his past had made him react that way. Well, it wouldn't be the same here if he could help it! He wanted Shin-Ah to feel as welcome and as safe as he could.
"It's going to start getting colder soon, so I put some extra blankets on your bed. I haven't decorated anything yet, though, so once you decide what you like we can go shopping in the capital and find you some artwork for your walls! And maybe some stuffed animals, I think you might like those."
Especially considering Ao was sort of a living version of one. Not that Shunsui minded: he had several teddy bears of his own!
"You never need to ask, all right? If you're hungry or want something to drink, you just go to the kitchen and have whatever you want! We can always go shopping and get more if we run out of something, so feel free to take anything at any time."
no subject
That seemed rather mean. Did the animals even want that? (Obviously he had no idea they were currently talking about toys here.)
Looking up at the man, he blinked a couple of times. They really had access to...so much. And he was allowed to have it.
"Thank you."
no subject
"Oh! I'm sorry, I wasn't very clear. These are just toys, they're made of cloth and soft filling so they're fluffy and look like animals, but they were never alive! Usually children have them, but I find them very comforting to hug at night. And sometimes in the day!"
Shunsui? A huge child of more than a thousand? What would ever make anyone think that?
He just smiled at the thanks, seeing them as unneccessary but not wanting to be rude by waving them away.
"Of course! Thank you for keeping me company! It's a big house and I'd get lonely out here all by myself."
no subject
He...was so touched. It was hitting him now that he was wanted like this. There was literally no obligation at all and no unusual bond like he had with the Dragons and Yona. This was just a person who had come to know him and now valued him and...
A tear fell down his face before he realized it. He had a family with Yona and the others but someone outside of them wanting him had been nothing but a dream. Because he was a monster and monsters weren't wanted. Even now it could be hard to see past that even after all that Yona and the others had done for him.
"I'll...I'll keep you company." He sniffed and realized he had a tear on his face. Oh. When had that happened? He knew he wasn't sad. He was so...happy.
a billion years later
He did see the tear, and without stopping to ask permission, he hugged the younger man to him tightly. He didn't know many details of his past, but he didn't really need to. He'd seen many, many things over the course of his life and Shin-Ah's reactions to things were very telling, both about the kind of person he was and the sort of things he'd been through.
Shunsui also knew what it was to be considered a monster. Not in the same way, by far, but being one of the most powerful of his cohorts and boasting one of the darkest power sets in all of Soul Society, it was easy to see why he chose to present himself as jovial and friendly. Luckily, he truly was those things, and choosing to focus on his love of life and all things fun and happy was easy!
"I'm glad! If you want to take your things up to your room, I can show you where it is! We'll have to go shopping tomorrow, but we should have plenty of food for tonight, so eat anything that looks good!"
no subject
"...Yes please."
Would it be okay being in his own room again? He'd gotten so used to sleeping with other people in a room with him. Part of him was nervous that this would be lonely like it had been for the fourteen years of his life when he'd been alone in a room. Yet, he did want to try at least. See if maybe it was different when there were others nearby.
And part of him wondered if this made him childish. To be scared to sleep alone again. He really had no way of knowing considering the life he'd grown up with.
Shifting a little, he adjusted his bag and Ao, ready to be shown the room.

It was intriguing enough for Koumei that he spent the morning in Sparrow Town preparing a small gift for the man as a token of well wishes...
But, he hadn't known that to expected of the building itself when he arrived at the lake.
Koumei felt underdressed in his simple hanfu when he arrived at the residence, bearing a pair of humble packages wrapped in brown paper and twine. Life outside of the public eye had taught him much of the simple comforts of life-- clean clothes, warm food, a comfortable place to sleep-- but he would have dressed in something more refined than traveller's garb, had he known.
Instead he merely exchanged a look with his Carrier once he crosse the threshold before staring at the residence with wide-eyed curiosity. Surely, amidst this sprawling floor plan with it's many rooms, there had to be a face he would find familiar in this.
sorry this is so late!
But that had been a necessity at the time, and Shunsui sincerely hoped that it hadn't bothered Koumei overmuch!
And the house was indeed large, but it was only for the sake of the teens Shunsui had asked to live with him! Shunsui had no real use for finery, and was a fan of simple comforts himself. That the home was large and had been well kept up had been important to him, but aside from that, he'd simply wanted a place that he and those he lived with might feel comfortable! His guests were included in that, and far from overdressed himself, Shunsui walked over in simple hakama and his ever present kimono, having forgone anything else aside from underthings.
"Koumei-san!" He was a bit uncertain as to how to refer to his comrade since the kiss. Chan and kun seemed far too intimate, and he didn't want to cross any lines that he shouldn't be, or to make the other man uncomfortable!
"Thank you so much for visiting, and for the gifts! You can set them anywhere, there's no need to carry them around. And please feel free to have as many refreshments as you like! There's a bit more variety in the kitchen, too. And please don't hesitate to explore, it's quite an interesting house and you're welcome in any part of it."
It's totally okay!
Now they both knew that they were alike in walking along the edge between darkness and light, for better or for worse-- and Koumei preferred not to dwell on the affair.
Instead he merely made note of the change on the odd affections Shunsui always showed him, for 'chan', 'kun' and 'san' were all strange to his ears and understandings. Such words were curious things to a man who grew up in a world where only single language was spoken worldwide.
"You've my thanks for inviting me, Mister Shunsui," Koumei said in return for the jovial words, offering a short and humble bow to accompany his reply as he found a place to set the gifts down. They were plum wine and sandalwood scented candles, as Shunsui would find later-- both seemed fitting housewarming gifts for a man who seemed to enjoy such sensory experiences.
"The view of the lake is lovely," he continued. "Although it seems rather far from the city for a man such as yourself. As exuberant as you are, I never took you as the sort to liking such a quiet venue."
annd late again whoops
But he could easily let the event fade, should that make Koumei more comfortable. It had never been his intent to try to make him feel out of place or put upon by the act, and he was worried he may have caused their budding friendship to take a bit of a hit with his actions.
"Ahhh, you'll find that despite outward appearances, I do very much value my solace and peace in a comfortable quiet place. A friend of mine had a home on a lake, and truth be told I bought this house largely due to that. And there are always wagons and horses about should I wish to go to town! Half an hour's walk never hurt anyone, either."
Although he'd likely complain about it, when he needed to actually make the trip! Still, with his training cut drastically short here aside from the hours he put in of his own accord, the walking would do him good!
And he would very much enjoy the candles! Plum wine and sandalwood were some of his favorite scents!

Not the past, and not the future.
...And the present, he decided, was much better than either of the alternatives.
"Hm...no, it hasn't." Koumei agreed, understanding where Shunsui's sentiments had originated from. Even Koumei himself could tolerate such things, although there had been a point in his life when he was loathe to do anything other than reading his beloved tomes in either his private quarters or the expansive library underneath the palace in Rakushou. "And the piece of familiarity must be a small comfort in this strange place.
I admit, I still find myself lost with the differences in customs here. Discovering the library and giving nuts and seeds to the pigeons in the city are how I've been able to get by thus far."
no subject
"The pigeons, eh? I haven't fed them myself, but I do tend to talk to them when I go to the city! Brave little things come right up to my feet, they must know I'm a bit of a soft heart for animals."
He had to chuckle a bit self-deprecatingly at that, bringing a hand up to ever-so-lightly stroke the wings of his carrier Pretty, who sat, as was her usual method, on his shoulder close to his face.
"But yes, the customs can be rather...well. I don't want to say vexing, since I've only really been acquainted with the customs where I come from, but I do like to study the habits and mores of other lands. The library here is good for that, although I do admit to spending a bit too much time in the romantic fiction area."
no subject
"I've found that studying the cultures is only a small help, for I still never know when a new acquaintance will want to shake my hand or bow, or when someone will chide me for being too polite."
He had never heard of being 'too polite' until he came to this country, after all. The fact that such formalities were considered odd truly baffled him.
gah all the lateness
He neglected to mention the epic romance love series he was authoring, since Koumei didn't seem the type to appreciate such a frivolous hobby. But Shunsui loved it, and the Rose-Colored Path was near and dear to his heart, even if the majority of Sould Society seemed only to tolerate its inclusion in the Seireitei Communication. He wasn't at all bothered by its less than lukewarm reception, though! Still, it didn't seem a good way to woo the highly intelligent and tactical man before him...
"Hmmm. In those cases I tend to simply mimic what I see, it's served me far better than being my usual self! I find I'm far too friendly for the great majority to be comfortable with upon first meetings, even in my own home..."
He might have been a little sad about that, but shook it off! Etiquette wasn't something he cared much for. Respect, surely, but all the strange rules and rituals made him feel too micromanaged.
Koumei being "too polite" wasn't something Shunsui would have accused him of, although he did think that the man could stand to loosen up a bit! Then again, he really wasn't one to go by...
Its okay~
"Ah, but I've tried mimickry as well, but it never has it's intended effect. Rather, it tends to make people more unnerved than they would have been otherwise."
After all, he didn't consider himself unapproachable. He was merely a quiet individual who treated everyone with the same manner: humble, respectful, and honest.

Then paused.
Blinking those jeweled eyes at the newcomer, he hesitated. Greeting people to a home was not a concept he was familiar with and he found himself not sure of what to do next. Which likely made for a very awkward situation of him standing there staring at the man and his carrier without saying a single word.
Um. Hello. He was capable of talking but he'd just...forgotten he should use his words.
no subject
And that was how this young man appeared. Feral, in almost every sense of the word.
The strange silence between them, a wild young man and a reclusive prince who had taken to a life in exile a little too well, grew uncomfortable enough that Koumei fell back into his old patterns-- and offered a humble bow to break the stalemate between them.
Good day, [He said evenly, with a polite smile.] It's quite a walk all the way out here!
no subject
"I live here." That was information he was supposed to provide right? Well if it wasn't he had now. Blinking a couple of times he realized that if he'd walked a long way then so had this person. Immediately he set his carrier down on top of his own head then trotted over to the kitchen.
Before long he'd come back with a glass of water for the person and a small bowl of water for the pigeon. People could try to tell him that the carriers were just that but to him they were creatures that should be valued and he wanted to take care of it as much as he did the visitor.
no subject
Curious, this young man-- and Shunsui as well. The boisterous man had always seemed like his heart overflowed with kindness, and that a spirit as bright as his could guide many...but he hadn't expected that to be the literal truth.
He stayed his ground when the young man suddenly sauntered away-- and returned with equal suddenness, a glass and bowl of water in tow.
Bobbing his head somewhat hesitantly, Koumei released Hatoha (the pigeon-- for his own naming sense was just as cliched as the young man's) and accepted the water for the both of them. He was grateful for the young man's sense, for he liked to consider Hatoha more akin to a 'pet' than a 'tool'
Pigeons were his primary company during his youth misspent amongst books and scientific tomes. Pigeons were a souce of comfort for him.
"Thank you," he said simply, setting the bowl down for Hatoha to curiously investigate while he drank gratefully from his glass. "We really appreciate this."
no subject
Sure.
Looking back toward the man, he hesitated a moment. He'd literally never been a host before. Was he supposed to do more at this point? Perhaps the best thing would be to offer comfort.
He could do that.
Trotting off again, he came back with a chair for him. There. Now he could sit if he wanted to!
no subject
"Can you show me the inside?" He asked patiently, with a small smile that was nothing but sincere.
He had no idea who this child was or how he was associated with Shunsui, but he could see why Shunsui would take such a child under his wing!
no subject
Which ended up with him staring a bit without really meaning to. The hair that was so red reminded him of Yona who he missed daily, who he constantly asked his ring for when he woke up. But, she wasn't here. Perhaps she shouldn't be...
Sorry, Koumei. He had a bad habit of staring at people sometimes. And forgetting to use his words. That was a thing.
