( OPEN ) God made the country and man made the town.
Who: Noel Vermillion & OPEN
When: April (see prompts for more accurate dates)
Where: Hall of Glory (Library), Capablanca, Palamede
What: Noel makes an effort to make herself useful in this world. Studying hard! Working hard! Rebuilding hard!
Rating: None really.
I. ONCE A LIBRARIAN, FOREVER A LIBRARIAN ;; Hall of Glory, April 1st - April 6th
[It's somewhat nostalgic─ it feels just like being back at the Military Academy. Living in a dormitory, studying magic (which is close enough to Ars Magus, as she's soon discovered), meeting so many different people... Noel remembers those days fondly and can only hope the memories of her stay in this world (however long it might be) will be just as positive. She realizes, of course, that with a war going on that may be an overly optimistic wish, but at the same time, it fuels her motivation to work even harder to bring an end to this conflict─ not only to help people in need and find a way home, but also so that she can leave this place without any regrets.
So with that thought in mind, Noel spends quite a bit of time in the library, reading any available information on this world's magic and browsing various spellbooks. She's... not exactly good at theory knowledge and a lot of terms and descriptions simply escape her understanding, but somehow, she'd better at it in practice. In fact, that's how she's managed to get several books to levitate. It turns out to be pretty fun, actually!
Come join her in studying! Alternatively, surprise her and watch all the books fall to the ground. That works, too.]
II. CHERRY-PICKING THE INGREDIENTS ;; Capablanca, April 10th - April 15th
[DID SOMEBODY SAY COOKING, NOEL IS RIGHT HERE─ and, frankly, she's a bit disappointed she's only supposed to gather the ingredients, not cook herself (thank God). Armed with a basket but sadly no red cloak, the girl sets out to the local fields in search of the best they have to offer. It doesn't take long until her basket becomes filled with various herbs and mushrooms─ and just in time, as the weather seems to be getting worse.]
This should be enough for today... Time to head back!
[If you look closely you might notice the ingredients she's gathered are not... exactly what one might want to see in their dinner. In fact, most of them are poisonous. Hemlock, nightshade berries, and... are those death cap? Yep, they sure are.
Someone should probably stop her before she brings these to the chef. Or worse yet, she tries to cook something with those and accidentally kills people.]
III. (a) SPRINGTIME CLEANING ;; Palamede, April 20th - April 30th
[Returning to this place was no easy task, but for one reason or another, Noel feels it's something she has to do. If there's any way she can assist in rebuilding the city, she's determined to do it. Unfortunately, she has no carpentry knowledge, nor can she lift heavy objects; as such, the most she can do is help with cleaning, but you won't see her complaining. She's currently fighting a particularly stubborn blood strain on the floor, which, along with the memories of what happened here shortly after her arrival, brings tears to her eyes. The girl quickly wipes them away, and takes a break to look around the town. It's a bit of a bittersweet image, because despite all the damage the city has suffered, everyone is making an effort to restore it to its former glory.]
... It looks better an better with each day, doesn't it?
[Noel says it mostly to herself, but perhaps to you as well, in case you happen to be around. She smiles a bit and then tightens her grip on her mop. Time to get back to work!]
III. (b) OBLIGATORY SUFFERING OPTION ;; Palamede, April 20th - April 30th
[They say the road to hell is paved with good intentions.
No one in their right mind could ever accuse Noel Vermillion of the lack of goodwill. But anger and grief don't have to be rational, and finding herself at the receiving end of those proves to be even more difficult than revisiting the site of recent tragedy. Some of Palamede's citizens have reacted to the events by lashing out on Heroes, despite their best attempt to help. Noel can't really blame them, but that doesn't make the accusations of some poor woman whose son got seriously injured in the fight any less painful to listen to.]
I'm sorry...
[It's all she can say, given the circumstances; there's no point in making excuses, after all.]
IV. CONTINUUM WILDCARD
[If there's something else you'd like to play out, hit me up via PM or at
psychelocks! Also, the dates given above are rough estimates, so no need to stick strictly to them if pushing it a day or two one way or another works better for you.]

III - a
[not that Kaito minded. not in this instance. there were some things that were worth pushing past one's limits for, and this was one of them. who cares that he's still sporting a bandage across his temple from a deep gash sustained during Graupera's fight? who cares if he still feels a touch of weariness from a lack of proper rest? he has work to do, and people to smile and laugh and cheer for. rest can come later]
[he hears Noel mumble to herself as he passes by with a bucket of water and a sponge in hand. stops, because the voice is familiar, as is the face when he turns around to regard it]
Ah. . . hey!
[it's been a while, and he finds that he's glad to see she's doing well]
Heh, I guess it is, yeah? We've still got a long way to go, but we're getting there.
no subject
Hello! ... Ah...
[It seems like the girl was going to add something else regarding the repairs, but ended up distracted by an entirely different thing that caught her attention. Her enthusiasm is quickly replaced by concern as she notices his injuries.]
Um, are you sure you should be working? Perhaps you should rest a bit...
[She does not mean to sound patronizing or question his ability to contribute to the reconstruction effort in any way, of course; it's just that she can't help but worry about him overworking himself in his current state.]
no subject
[oh. right. the bandage on his temple. Kaito wrinkles his nose and lifts his free hand to brush his fingers against his injury]
This? C'mon, who hasn't had worse than this before? I'm pretty sure rest is the very last thing I need right now.
[and help is the very first thing Palamede needs]
Try not to worry too much, huh? Or you might find yourself getting worry lines at a very young age.
no subject
[Noel frowns a bit and even lets out a small "hmph!" to go with that statement. You can't joke like that to a lady, Kaito! Skin is a serious matter!!
... But apparently it's not that serious, as a smile soon returns to her face. In all honesty, she finds his dedication admirable and has no intention of getting in his way. In fact, she'd be delighted to support him.]
I understand. But if you feel tired or need anything, don't hesitate to tell me, alright? I may not be a healer, but I've been studying some healing spells lately, so... um... I-I'd be happy to help!
no subject
You too, huh?
[Kaito's own healing magic could still use some work, but he'd been putting a lot of dedication into it lately as well. . . almost as much as he's been putting into his new, budding alchemical pursuits]
Heh, I'll keep that in mind, you might wanna save your mana for the residents of Palamede. [he's still doing that "don't worry about me, focus your attention on other people" thing, apparently] It sounds like you figured out how the magic of this world works, though.
no subject
Ah... W-Well, I'm definitely not a professional! [The girl looks rather sheepish saying that, intertwining her fingers nervously. She didn't mean to make it sound like she's bragging or anything!] It's just, um, i-it's not all that different from how Ars Magus works back in my world... it was strange to get used to at first, but using mana is a bit similar to how we utilize seithr, so it gets a bit easier if I think of it that way...
[Noel trails off, as if she suddenly remembered something she's forgotten...]
O-Oh, I'm sorry, I shouldn't ramble so much...!
no subject
[he stares at her blankly, clearly only understanding about half of what she said]
It's-- er.
I haven't got a clue what those things are, but you're right about it getting easier once you sorta figure out how the flow words.
[and as if to demonstrate his point, he waves his hand back and forth in a smooth, curvy motion. to illustrate the word "flow," of course]
II
And, though he might not admit it, even to himself, it's oddly nice to not have to do anything except simple tasks. There's no looking ahead to the next step, always planning for the future; he has to focus on the present now for lack of anything else to focus on.
So strange.
He is, however, distracted by Noel's approach. He's no cook, but he can certainly recognise plants, and...well, what is that. ]
...Er, miss, I don't believe those are edible. [ He has his own basket full of things that aren't going to kill upon tasting. Part of him just wants to let her go on and see what happens, but that wouldn't be nice, would it. ]
no subject
Oh! Is that so? I must have grabbed it by mistake...
[She seems genuinely surprised by her carelessness, though considering the dishes she cooks with perfectly edible ingredients could easily send a person to a hospital for a week, it shouldn't be that much of a shocking revelation. One has to wonder what the result of her cooking with these would be.]
Um, if it's alright... Could you tell me which ones you're talking about?
[All of them, probably.]
no subject
you are going to kill someone with the contents of that basket" is basically the abridged version of what he wants to say, but refrains from doing so... ]
Er, well...
It'd be better for you to give that basket of ingredients to someone who can make potions, to be frank. They're really not edible.
[ He sounds apologetic. ] Er, would you like a lesson on which plants you can pick?
[ He's radiating hopefulness. He's a teacher who just wants to help!! (though really he got all his knowledge from researching here, but, well. Better than nothing.) ]
no subject
[Noel seems pretty disappointed. She's been trying so hard, and it's all in vain! Or perhaps not, since the man has a very good point─ even though she's made a mistake, those can still be of use to someone. With that thought in mind, the girl figures she should put some extra effort into researching which herbs are edible and which are not. That way she could gather things for both the chef and potion makers!]
Um, if you don't mind... I would really appreciate it!
[She gives him a small bow. Noel might not be the sharpest knife in the drawer, but she's always willing to listen to those smarter than herself, at least.]
3-b
-And while Noel was certainly too polite for her own good, there were people out there with too much gumption and not nearly enough sense to know when something was none of their business. And that was Cirno in a nutshell.-
Leave her alone! She's doing her best, isn't she? And aren't you and your son?
-Cirno may have been short, but she still cut a somewhat imposing stature when she stood between the old woman and Noel.-
Bad things happen, even to people who never did nothing wrong, and that's tough. But that doesn't mean you get to go around being mean to people who are just trying to help! If I was your kid, I'd be embarrassed by an old woman like you carrying on like this! Pointing fingers and cussing out little girls!
no subject
Suddenly hearing an unfamiliar voice, Noel raised her gaze to see another girl (one of the Blanc's heroes at that) stepping between her and the woman, almost as if shielding her from the accusations. What she said was sound and logical, but after being baffled for a moment, the mother carried on, clearly considering all that Cirno told her to be mere excuses.
Without a second of thought, Noel decided she should intervene before it escalated.]
A-Ah... N-No, it's alright... It's my fault, really...
no subject
Which didn't sit well with Cirno, of course.- You wanna say that again, old lady?! -She was about ready to start swinging if Noel didn't stop her.-
no subject
[Having no other way to prevent the situation from going out of hand, Noel grabbed Cirno's shoulder and pulled her away from the woman, standing between the two.]
I-I'm sorry. We don't mean to cause you any trouble, so...
[The girl bowed politely along with the apology, which left the woman somewhat confused once again. But the wounds left by the Noir's attack were still too fresh and her expression soon hardened; with one final "I will not forgive you, nor any of the Blanc's heroes," the woman turned around and left quickly.
Noel grabbed onto her skirt tightly, tears filling her eyes.]
no subject
Only the idiot calls other people idiots... -She grumbled, before turning her attention back to Noel.-
... Why are you crying?
no subject
N-No, it's nothing! It's just, um... it must be really hard for people here, and─
[She trailed off, not sure if she even had the right to guess how the citizens of Palamede might feel. Instead, she figured she should thank the girl for standing up for her... and apologize for not having done the same.]
Ah... I'm sorry. I-I know you meant well for me and I'm grateful for that, but... I didn't want you to get into a fight because of me...
no subject
no subject
W-Well, either way, I'm glad we managed to resolve this peacefully! [... Did they really? It's not like either side was entirely pleased with how it turned out, but no one got hurt and that's good enough for Noel.] The last thing Palamede needs is more conflict, I think...
no subject
What happened to this place anyways? I get that there was an attack, but... these people seem more upset than usual.
III A
Indeed it is. Ultimately it's time that will return what was lost.
no subject
Yes... And with everyone working so hard, I'm sure we can make it a little easier on the people here!
[Not just when it comes to reconstruction of the city, of course─ the residents need to feel their support in order to be able to return to their normal lives.]
no subject
Precisely. More than anything Palamede needs a strong spirit. With that everything else comes into place easily.
[Isn't that his philosophy in a nutshell?]
II aka remix heart option
Well, tries to. He can't help cringing, especially when it becomes clear that death caps are among the "ingredients" she picked up.]
...what are you planning to do with these?
[Women are scary...]
we do not speak of remix heart (unless gilbert turns into a girl i guess)
[Noel greets him with a sunny smile, as if she's not carrying enough poisonous things to kill at least half of the Blanc's heroes in her hand.]
A chef in Petrosian asked for help gathering ingredients... So I figured I would bring him some! It's too bad we can't cook with him, though...
[Yeah, real shame. Just imagine what kind of dishes she could create with these! ... Or don't, for the sake of retaining sanity.]
sweats...it's not like the mangaka drew genderbent gilbert or anything...
[So that's the story behind her walking down the street with the basket filled with these...well, it doesn't make things much better, but at least now Gilbert's sure that he just jumped to conclusions.]
Is he planning to poison his customers, though?
[That comes off as a little blunt, but on the other hand...it's just the truth.]
i
That's a neat trick.
i
Of course, she happens to have all these books in her arms as she rounds the end of the shelves, and happens into a levitating book that she couldn't see. ]
E-Eh?! [ The stack starts to sway to one direction while Maki compensates too much in the other direction. The books start to topple, Maki's concerned face appearing behind them. ]
