Afraid to lose control, caught up in this world
Who: Yukari Takeba and OPEN
When: Sometime in the first half of April, after the intro
Where: About Capablanca
What: Ingredient'in'
Rating: Despite the 'doing it raw' joke I want to make, there should not be anything worth warning for
[You know what Yukari really wants a break from? The fact that she spent like two days mopping up sap and bird crap from that stupid stronghold, and hasn't had a chance to go to the beach, or even really get to know the resort town.
This is cruel in kind of a different way. Who starts a war in a place like this?
She supposes she can't be too surprised - their 'enemies' did start everything with that attack on what should've been a peaceful international exhibition.
Regardless, she likes being on the beach, and she wants money, so a call for people to pick up ingredients shouldn't be too bad, right? She can get to know some of the locals, explore around a bit, and help out - while making a little spending cash.
... Except the chef has some stupid taste; so one can find her in one of two ways:
1) at the beginning of her job: before she knows the chef is really... particular. In this case, she's about as much hanging around window shopping as she is picking up real ingredients.
or!
2) a couple days later: when she finds out the chef is a hardass and didn't like half of what she brought him. So now it's kind of personal, and she's a little miffed. So, basically, back to being Yukari.
Catch her whenever!]

[he says with a snort as he drops both sets of mushrooms into his satchel, which he has slung around his shoulder and resting at his side. his gaze flickers away momentarily as he readjusts his bag, and when he looks up again, his eyes have returned to their natural color]
I s'pose you could say it like that. I volunteered to earn a li'l extra cash.
[the payout from the Capablanca investigation had been impressive, but Kaito is always on the lookout for extra colle. he squints at Yukari, considering]
Though judging by that response, you're not having an easy time of it, are you?
no subject
... Does she make a mention of it?
No, maybe she'll just stare for a few seconds longer.]
Um... yeah... I guess that's the way to say it. I can't tell half these things apart, or what makes some of the more rare ingredients any different than the other junk they have. And this guy's waaay too much of a jerk about the whole thing. [And she wants to get paid.]
no subject
Keh, no kidding. I got yelled at him for bringing an apple with a slight bruise on it on the first day. You'd think he'd be a lot nicer to the people who're helping him with his ingredients.
[he scowls as he commiserates with her over the their boss's pickiness. then, with a heavy sigh, he jerks a thumb towards himself and replaces that scowl with another grin]
Oi! I can help you with the "telling things apart" bit, though. Heh, I got a pretty cool new ability that makes identifying good ingredients pretty easy.
no subject
Oh ya can? I was gonna go find Aigis and see if I can't get her to analyze stuff, but if you can do it, too, that'd be awesome!
no subject
[he pushes that away quickly with a shake of his head]
I'll save you a trip to go find your friend. [he holds out a hand with a grin] Lemme see whatcha got so far.
[or more specifically, let him put his greasy hands all over the food that people will be eating]
no subject
She does, however, proffer a couple of lemons.]
Well, I guess there's this? They both look ripe, but how can ya tell if one lemon is better than another? It's weird. It's just fruit, if they're both about the same ripeness, shouldn't they taste the same?
no subject
[and a few seconds later, he lifts a head and nods, handing Yukari the lemon that he held in his left hand]
This one. Slightly more ripe. Better quality. Should pass our persnickety employer's judgment.
[how did he even do that??]
no subject
If it's not, we're gonna have to talk!
no subject
[Kaito asks with a laugh as he tosses the ripe lemon at her. catch!! the not-so-ripe one he throws up and down in the air casually, catching it each time it falls back down into his palm]
If he yells at you, then you can tell him it's my fault. I'll take the heat for it instead. I'm that confident.
no subject
Okay. If you say so. [Is she holding him to that? Maybe jokingly. She has some snark to her, too, but not always in a mean way.] I'll be back for ya.
Anyway, you out for the same thing? [Motioning at the mushrooms.]
no subject
Maybe not the exact same recipe as you are, but I'm lookin' for ingredients nonetheless, right? Ol' cranky chef asked for ingredients for chicken with garlic mushroom sauce. Which, uh. . . means I'll have to bring him a whole chicken, too.
[and he immediately MAKES A FACE]
no subject
[Oh.]
Um... maybe there's a butcher around? [And... they can do the dirty work?] Y-you could maybe bring them a chicken, instead?
no subject
If Chef Snappy thinks that I'm gonna butcher a chicken for him, he has another thing coming.
[Kaito wasn't a vegetarian, but he also did not have the stomach to butcher poor animals. NOPE. NOT THIS MAGICIAN]
I'm gonna buy one that's already been cleaned, don't worry.
no subject
[She hasn't the stomach to slaughter animals, even ones that are kind of ugly like chickens.]
W-well, that's good. I guess you'd have to catch one like right off the block, though, if you wanna meet his... taste or whatever.
no subject
I'm sure a couple of local butchers wouldn't mind doing a favor for someone as charming and friendly as me, right?
no subject
She isn't sure if it's in the good way or the bad way, but this guy hasn't yet proven himself to be quite as... stupid as Junpei, so she'll let it slide. Kinda.]
Maybe if you're good at talking. Or ya got money... these guys around here seem to really like cash.
no subject
"Bribery" isn't exactly the crime I'd choose to commit, if I had to commit one.
[which leaves the question of which crime he would choose. . .]
But I like to think I am pretty good at talking.
no subject
[DOES SHE BELIEVE HIM? Answer: Unlikely, but she... doesn't pry. For now.]
But being good at talking gets ya places, so, I guess it's good you have a talent for it. [She doesn't have anything of the sort. She's just. Uh. Yukari?]
no subject
[that statement is more thoughtful than anything, and he actually lapses into pensive silence afterwards]
. . . sometimes it feels like a lot to live up to.
no subject
B-besides, all we know is that Blanc are the 'good guys' and Noir are the 'bad guys', and we STILL don't have any reason why that is. You don't really need a reason to help people, but, sometimes, I'd like to know exactly what I'm sticking my neck out for. We're just Heroes without... much of a reason to be, really, except we're not bad people? Maybe?
no subject
[his mouth twitches]
S'a little more complicated than that, from what I understand. But I've been digging through history books and asking a lot of questions.
[which still didn't mean he had all of the answers, but it helped him understand where the conflict began]
Noir and Blanc actually fought a war some 200 years ago over the "correct" way to consume and use the mana of this world. Blanc thought the mana should be preserved as nature, and Noir thought it should all be industrizlied and used by humans. There's not a lot of information from that time period available, but Blanc won that war, and things have been tense between the two countries ever since.
Noir made the first move against Blanc in this new war back at Palamede. And Blanc. . . well.
Blanc's just defending itself as best as it can.
no subject
... Neither side are the 'good guys' here?
no subject
[he makes a face]
But if Noir's willing to attack innocent citizens and children in order to make a point, then I've already made up my mind on which side I'd rather support.
[for now, anyway. unless Blanc's own strategies change]
no subject
... I mean, is there even a really big downside to using mana for humans?
I dunno, I haven't felt right about this whole thing from the start. Obviously, I don't want more people to get hurt like... what happened before. But... nothing about this sits right.
Maybe I'm just paranoid.
no subject
[he folds his arms, brows furrowing]
But even war has rules and standards, doesn't it? Attacking kids? [he shakes his head] That's low. Even if Noir's stance on mana usage isn't bad, I can't condone the methods they use to send their message.
[he breathes out, his gaze affixed at a random point in space, as though he's lost in thought]
You're right about none of it sitting right, though. It hasn't from the beginning. But I guess-- for me-- what I can focus on right now is protecting people. So. . . that's what I'm gonna do.
