(OPEN) WORK FOR THE WORKING MAN
Who: Minato Arisato & others!
When: Throughout March
Where: Around Blanc
What: Job quest post for the month of March
Rating: None
[ Reference for the Job Post is here. Also, if you're interested and haven't already, you can pick your character's arcana for Social Linking! ]
001-A. Meeting & Greeting
[ Minato wouldn't exactly say that he's good with kids, but he does have some experience with them. Of course, even considering the thought that it's appropriate to encourage a kindergartner to run away is probably not the best example to set, yet here he is anyway. Maiko, a former Social Link of his, isn't all children, and the orphanage has plenty that are excited about heroes coming over. He'd built a snowman for them once, he can do something else.
Besides, he'd gotten cookies out of that deal too. Worth it.
He looks like the life of the party, really. He's got a little girl on his back, and another kid trying to hang from his arm, but the whole five-foot-seven of him doesn't lead for a good height to dangle from. Surprisingly, throughout all of this, he's got a pretty straight face on. But.
This is a little much.
Help? ]
001-B. Now it's Story Time
[ So the kids want to know about the heroes' home worlds, do they? Truthfully, there are a lot of similarities when one looks at the very basics. You know, oxygen, land, water, etc. But those don't make for very good stories. He isn't really going to get any points (or colle, for that matter) by explaining the water cycle, is he? At least it would prove he paid attention to the lessons in second grade.
What can he say about Earth, though? Minato spares a glance at the hero beside him before turning his attention back to the children gathered around them. They're expecting a good story. ]
...Well...
[ A man of many words he is not. It's not that he doesn't have things to say, he just generally keeps to himself unless prompted otherwise. A dozen eager eyes looking at him expectantly certainly fit the bill. ]
[ Yeah, don't be an asshole, dude. They're just kids. ]
It's really not that different...I lived in a big city and had to go to school, too.
[ Except for the whole trying to stop the end of the world thing, but you know, details.
Hey Hero, maybe you have a better story? ]
002-A. Herbs with an H
[ Minato has done a lot of silly things to fulfill some equally silly quests posed to him by some otherworldly being that lived in a room only he had access too. If that doesn't sound odd enough to begin with, it really does get a lot stranger than that. But aside from keeping an eye on a persimmon tree at school--and, literally, it's about watching it--Minato has zero experience with plants, nor a green thumb.
So what constitutes an herb, let alone one in good condition? He agreed to the job because of the money, of course. Shirosabe, his carrier, is starting to garner an appetite about the same as him, which is a lot. And no one should be subjected to Monday meals. Ever. He's resigned to eat out on those days. The struggle is real.
Supposedly they're "all over", but how is he supposed to know what distinguishes an herb as an herb or just...a weed? ]
...Isn't an herb technically any type of plant?
[ Could they just grab a handful of grass? He's got a baggy and everything. ]
002-B. Desperate Thymes call for desperate measures
[ Going it straight-laced can only yield mediocre results. Sometimes there's a reason people go dark side. Sometimes, when push comes to shove, or when there are slim pickings in the public areas, heroes have to turn to a life of crime. Much like penguins.
Minato is one such penguin. Er, hero. And with so many others working on the same job, if he's going to get any money for this, he has to bend the rules a little. But who says he's going down by himself? Oh no, team effort is important. Right? Teammates. Not accomplices. Why would you think that.
Which is why they are found in someone's back yard in one of the nicer parts of time. Pretend it's a little bit like Robin Hood, stealing from the rich's gardens and giving them to...some guy who is going to pay them for it. Okay, it's nothing like Robin Hood, but this person has all their plants labeled and there are definitely some recognizable, herbish plants there. ]
..."Wolf's bane" right next to "oregano". That would be a weird sauce.
[ Is someone protecting against werewolves? ]
003. Wild Card
[ Inspired by something else? Please feel free to write your own prompt! You can also hit me up at
doggystyle if you have any questions. ]

Ahahahaha.
At least Kaito did the research, though. Minato kind of came into it too open-minded since the definition of "herb" is fairly broad, although that doesn't necessarily mean that they're good for alchemy. ]
What do you use it for?
[ Not actually werewolves, right? ]
no subject
[he says bluntly, with a quirked eyebrow and his mouth twitched into an amused grin. because someone would definitely want a poisonous aconite plant in their sauce]
Either that, or to ward off werewoleves. Maybe this guy has a stray dog problem?
no subject
...Is he trying to kill someone?
[ Are they assisting in murder? ]
no subject
[as. . . weird as it sounded to think that]
I-- [cue pensive pause]
Probably not? I mean, what're the chances?
no subject
...I don't know. What do people usually do with alchemy?
[ Give him a second to think. ]
Isn't it turning stuff into gold?
[ Crap. Should have actually paid attention to Edogawa's lectures. Now there's something he never thought would come true... ]
no subject
[Kaito crouches low to pick a sprig of wolfsbane as he speaks. certainly Alix will want to use a couple of these herbs for whatever brew he wants to concot next]
Part of it is turning metals into gold, sure. But that's just the tip of the iceberg. Ever hear of the elixir of life-- or the philosopher's stone? The panacea? Alkahest, the universal solvent?
[carefully, he tugs the plant into the bag he has slung over his shoulder, careful not the crush the petals as he does so]
Alchemy in this world seems to be a li'l bit different from that though, based on what I've read. I'm still learning about it, but there's a focus on creating medicines, potions that cause status effects, and bombs with elemental affinity.
[NERD ALERT]
no subject
He's actually impressed. Kaito seems to know a lot more about this than one would get just by poking lightly at the library. Minato figures he should have done more research first, but, you know, it seems to work out for him in the end with these kind of things. Like lo and behold, he's teamed up with someone who did it for him.
Score. ]
You seem to know a lot about it.
[ Nerds are good. Minato likes nerds. Nerds are very useful and, honestly, often underestimated. But he will hang out with almost anyone. ]
So...to make up for our lack of abilities, we'll use items.
[ Eh, that doesn't seem to weird, he guesses. Of course, that implies he's used to having more of these things at his disposal. ]
no subject
[he sounds a little pleased with himself, and not at all bothered by the fact that Minato is profiting form his hard work in the library]
And I guess that's the gist of it, though I can't imagine creating these-- uh, potions, or whatever-- is easy.
[. . .]
Geez, when I say it like that it makes us all sound like witches.
[and he instinctively shies away from that comparison]
no subject
...Should we save some of this for ourselves?
no subject
What, you weren't planning on doing that already?
[you heard it here first, ladies and gentleman. Kaitou Kid has beem downgraded from jewel thief to herb thief]
no subject
I guess that should have been obvious.
[ Yeah, Minato, where are your klepto tendencies, huh? ]
I should have brought a bigger bag.
no subject
You can put some of your herbs in mine if you run out of room.
[gives his satchel a light pat, not wanting to crush the plants already gently laid inside]
The rest of 'em you can just. . . I dunno. Stuff in your shirt or something.
[resuming they aren't toxic via skin contact]
no subject
Minato looks down at the handful he has and...
...does just that. Into his shirt they go.
Yes, let's hope he's not allergic. If he is, it's totally on you, Kaito. ]
no subject
[there's a pause while Kaito scrutinizes his fellow hero, before he lifts his thumb and jabs it at the collar of Minato's shirt]
. . . you've left a couple of leaves sticking out.
no subject
[ Thanks, Kaito. Someone might have seen his contraband if you hadn't stepped in.
> You sense his legitimate concern for your bad ideas...
Oh, here we go. The voices have started again. Minato seemingly stares upwards for no reason. ]
[ ...Mmm. That isn't surprising, actually. Kaito's proven to be a reliable person, as well as a partner-in-crime.
After a moment, Minato refocuses and gives a nod. ]
I'll just hope no one gives me a pat down.
[ There would be literally no reason for that. Unless he stuffed his shirt so full he looked like a balloon. ]
no subject
[Kaito quirks an eyebrow as his partner-in-crime seems to lose focus for a moment, but he brushes that aside in favor of focusing on the task at hand]
Doubly so, because if they did, they'd probably crush whatever you've got hidden in the--
[but his comment is cut short by loud noises suddenly coming from the house attached to the backyard they're currently snooping around in. er. they maaaay not be welcome in this little herb garden for much longer, at this rate]
no subject
Oops. ]
...Time to go.
no subject
[his reply is quick, a hushed whisper, and he wastes no time in bolting towards the yard's wooden fence. which he vaults over in one, seemingly effortless leap, too. just in time, because there are now voices coming from inside of the house]
[who's there?! what's going on--]
no subject
Kaito, that's impressive. He'll make sure to comment on that leap later. Because, for the moment, he has to get the hell out of dodge. Minato follows suit, although he has to hoist himself up and over the fence, sparing only a momentary glance back as he sees the back door to the garden open.
Hey! Stop!
Nope!
As soon as he's over, he shoves Kaito in the shoulder. ]
Five blocks at least.
no subject
[he hisses in return. the shove propels him forward, even as cries of stop those thieves! echo behind them.]
[man he really hopes the owner of that garden didn't catch sight of their bright white uniforms. otherwise, they're gonna be in a whoooole lot of trouble]
no subject
OFF THEY GO! Heroes can't be the only people who wear white, right? They probably should have thought about that first before they decided to turn to a life of crime. Get your act together, Kaito!
But after the third block, Minato spares a glance over his shoulder. ]
...I don't think they're following.
no subject
[right now, recognition is probably nnnot the greatest thing. Kaito also chances a glance over his shoulder when Minato speaks]
You sure? They could just be pretty far behind us, y'know.
no subject
No, right now is definitely not. What if word got back to the upper ups? ]
Mm...
[ He exhales through his nose. ]
A few more blocks. Yeah.
[ Just in case. ]
no subject
Let's duck into the first restaurant we find, too.
[to get out of plain sight. that's Thief Running from the Authorities 101 stuff, right there]
[plus, you know. it's lunch time]
no subject
It is lunch time. Minato's stomach rumbles as if on cue. ]
Yes.
[ He's rather quick to agree to that idea. ]
