I may not be an expert on this sort of thing, I'm still figuring it out as well, but I think... home is somewhere that you can laugh and smile, with people and things that remind us what is really important.
It's as you said—even if something causes you to think differently about it, or somehow you find yourself unable to return, that doesn't make it any less home. It will always be something special. But something I've realized is that... it's all right to be able to make a home somewhere else as well, as long as it is filled with people you love, and things that make you happy.
And maybe, if you can show them that, this place will become somewhere that they might be happy to say "welcome home" in as well.
