[closed] everybody's working for the weekend + overflow for july intro log
Who: Rin, Saber, Kija, Hakuno, Ed, Setsuna, and Bolin (and anyone from the July intro!)
When: Throughout the month of June, into mid-July
Where: Various sites; Caissa to start, then Lasker
What: Completing jobs and doing good deeds. Repurposing "first date" time, in some cases. Doing intro log things.
Rating: Should be pretty safe, will be updated accordingly. Right now the only warnings may be for death and occasional cute... and some scandalousness... TW: mentions of suggestive things in the water festival thread!
Have a Drink (from June 5th on, Caissa/closed to Hakuno)
[it wasn't actually rin's first choice for a convenient way to occupy her days in caissa, but... money is valuable, and money must be earned. just because the worlds have changed, that doesn't make the economics any different. and rin loves money, so of course she finds herself contributing at least some effort to the paid, heroic cause.
it took her a little time to find her own niche in the ongoing dance of the drops festivities. fortunately, people are predictable, and, also fortunately, a pair of pretty female saviors will add a certain charm to the ongoing water fights. dragging hakuno along with her, they've usurped a simple shaded booth where a vendor has asked them to hand out popsicles and other frozen treats for the occasion.
the major draw of the booth, though, is to greet two of blanc's own newest heroes. in bikinis.]
Here you go~! [the smile rin has stretched across her face is almost too saccharine to be believable, her co-conspirator in building public morale will note. she passes a colorful ice cream cone to a waiting patron.] Enjoy the festival, today! Recharge and head back out to receive summer's blessings!
TSI: Train Scene Investigation (from June 25th to July 3rd, Lasker/closed to Saber and Kija)
[after hearing the dismal news, there's no way she can abandon those rail cars. rin sets out from lasker to search for the strewn cars; are you accompanying her?
the harsh and unrelenting landscape doesn't seem to dull her determination to discover survivors. if the coast is mysteriously clear, she listens for cries of help or the pitiful whimpers that could only belong to a small, and frightened, child. just as well, she'll keep her eyes open for bodies—whether motionless or still struggling—the cars themselves, and any other pieces of wreckage, always approaching them to hunt for more unfortunate victims.
throughout it all, her face is grim, but her wavering blue eyes betray how much the tragedy affects her.]
Soul Train (from June 25th to July 15th, Lasker/closed to Ed, Setsuna, and Bolin)
[it's not even a question that she would chip in to aid the refugees. when she isn't elsewhere, rin is somewhere within the shield, busy with the work of providing relief for those rudely displaced by the trainwreck.
occasionally, she's trotting off with heavy baskets of clothing, blankets, and various supplies to carry them up to a certain floor of a safehouse. if she doesn't foist one (or several) on you—]
Here, take this. I don't want to hear any complaints.
[—you're with her as she knocks on the door to a newly arrived, and traumatized, resident.]
It's all right. We're here to help you.
[at other times, rin is delivering practical first aid among a group of survivors, adding to the ongoing discussion of noir's attack in a manner that is neither impolite nor too sugarcoated. while winding a bandage around an injured arm, she admits,]
No, you're right. The better decision would have been to split up our forces equally. There was no need for this folly in dividing us.
[some of those gathered nod their heads in soft agreement. some are more outspoken and angry.
most often, though, rin is whipping up homemade meals with that specific touch of care in a makeshift tent, station, or even small kitchen commandeered for the cooking effort. she holds the end of a wide spoon to your face, her hand cupped beneath it to catch any spills, and asks,]
Will you please try it? [she smiles warmly, giggling a little.you may be wondering oh my god is this really rin tohsaka] Hehe! I want to make sure it meets approval.
[who knows what she's prepared, exactly, but it definitely smells comforting and divine... and tastes rich and delicious, with a distinct hint of spiciness.]

Overflow for the July Intro (July 8th/closed to a bunch of people)
[rin's top-level here! threads will be linked and continued below.]

Sure. [ He takes it from her easily, their fingers pressing together with the transfer of weight. ] Where do you need it?
no subject
[what was he saying about enjoying people depending on him? he's in luck, it's exactly something rin would praise him for. it's still strange to... touch him, in that weird, forbidden, slightly awkward way when a person is essentially a stranger to you, but you're beginning to become used to them and their body heat—
bolin will receive the refreshing hit of a wave with a dolphin in it rushing through him.
anyway, the weight of the pot transfers from rin's thin arms to bolin's muscular ones smoothly.]
Take it outside. You'll figure it out.
[she turns her attention to the cabinets, collecting silverware.
there's a door just beside them, and it leads out to a small wooden table...
packed with refugee kids, but with enough room to sit rin and bolin, too.]
no subject
But he turns around with a cheery ] sure! [ in response before shouldering his way through the door.
The kids cheer at the sight of the pot, or at least some of them do; there are a couple that remain somewhat morose. Bolin's gaze snags on them for a moment, but he's all energy for the more excited kids.
Setting the pot at the centre of the table, he warns the eager children about how hot the contents are, spooning the soup into the bowls that have already been stacked up and ready for use.
His own stomach is growling now, but he does his best to endure, waiting for Rin to join him. ]
no subject
Hey, Rin!
[when they see her; just judging by their body language, they're familiar to her.
rin circles the table placing down smaller spoons to accompany the bowls bolin has set out. with her, she delivers both greetings and reprimands: sit down, be patient, don't pull your sister's hair. she doesn't have much experience as an actual big sister or in caring for young children, but she comes off like a motherly figure. she scoops stew into a bowl of her own and one for him, then settles next to some of the quietest children—the spot to her side is open for bolin, as well.
there's a clamor of the spoons on bowls, excited chatter, and the sounds of kids scrambling on the wooden benches before rin claps her hands together just once. she reminds them,]
Remember what I taught you? Use your manners.
[as a group—a fidgety, mismatched group, but a group nonetheless—the children link their tiny hands together and respond,]
Itadakimasu!
[now, it's time for the feeding rampage...]
no subject
It's so good!
[ His shoulders are curled up in delight, and the earthbender's got his face tilted heavenward as if in thanks. It's more reminiscent of the food back home than anything the Hall of Glory had to offer, and even if he's already feeling a little hot, he's glad to have dumplings and soup rather than yet another sandwich.
Or something equally stale. ]
You really did a good job. [ He tosses a grin at Rin. ] Where'd you learn to cook?
no subject
she thinks to herself that bolin dived in and started eating a little too early, but it's all fine. she titters at him, dodging out of the way of his shoulder, and hides her laughter behind her hand, her own spoon lifted halfway to her mouth.]
Well, thank you. I didn't expect you to tell me so. Um, it's natural to learn how to cook when you've been the only one making your own meals for a long time, right?
no subject
His gaze drops back to his bowl where he focuses on splitting a dumpling in half, to get some of the heat out of it and just to get the soup into every part of the dish. ]
Ah really, you live alone then?
no subject
a delayed reaction of dismay that doesn't reach rin's face washes over her. she finishes swallowing the spoonful of soup she'd brought to her lips, then answers bolin warily—perhaps a bit uncertainly.]
I... have lived alone, yes.
[since it's probably more information than he's bargaining for, she tries to look like it's no big deal when she explains, matter-of-factly:]
My father passed away when I was very young, you see. My mother died after him, but she was incapacitated at around the same time we lost him— I had to take care of myself.
no subject
She's not the first orphan that he's met here (too many of the children at this table), but it's heartbreaking every time.
His arm shifts as he leans further to the side to press against hers in lieu of a hand on her shoulder, as a show of solidarity and comfort. ]
I'm sorry to hear that. [ He knows what it's like to lose parents after all, and that hurt never goes away. ] I think you did a great job though.
[ Taking care of herself. ]
no subject
but he's so expressive... rin wasn't expecting this much sympathy. she freezes, her cheeks tinting red, while his arm nudges against hers. she's not used to physical contact for comfort like this, either.
that's not even touching on the compliment. you did a great job. it sounds as though he's not just talking about her cooking, but... her everything.]
A-A-Aaah... Thank you?
[she guesses? it would be clear she's happy but speechless, not disgusted or anything.
of course, this is when a blond boy chirps up at rin from across the table.]
Are you getting married?
no subject
Married? [ He looks amazed at the idea. ] I'm only twenty, you know. I bet that seems really old to you, but that's way too young to get married!
[ Well, not really, but in Bolin's mind it is. He's still immature in mind, and though he most certainly wants to get married one day, he's still mostly looking to have a good time at the moment.
Though he's not sure what Rin's ideas are, and he tosses a look at her. ]
Hey, do you have a boyfriend or anything?
[ Is she even single?? ]
no subject
... Yeah, you're really old.
[but a smaller girl next to him, with her hair done up in pigtails that look mysteriously like rin's, blurts out,]
It's okay, though. Don't cry. You don't even have gray hair yet, and poppa used to say that was when you know you're getting ancient.
[rin hasn't really ignored the question, she's just still processing it—or maybe honestly thinking of an answer? how would she describe what she has going on with shirou? they hadn't exactly formed a never-ending pledge to each other, and the topic of significant others is confusing between them, but it'd be a lie to say her heart doesn't ache for his company. eventually, she adds,]
No. Not here.
[it isn't a lie. actually, pondering over the question has made her less embarrassed about the boy's comment than she would be otherwise.
so single and ready to mingle, start your fuckboi engines bolin]
no subject
It earns a laugh from the kids at least, and he turns a grin toward another girl who giggles and offers insincere reassurances, her cheeks lighting up with a cute pink before her attention shifts back to her soup.
But Bolin is having fun, though he always does when he's surrounded by people, sitting down at a table to each together like a large family. It's not something that he ever got to experience before Korra, and it's just one more thing that he's so grateful to her for introducing into his life. It's enough to leave him in good spirits when he looks over at Rin, giving her a knowing smile. ]
I bet you're pretty popular though, it must be nice.
[ Well, Hero fame aside. He's not really counting the strange accumulation of fans that they have. ]

for that matter, watching bolin interact with the children lightens her mood. some men are awkward around children, or just plain cruel, but rin always thinks being able to care for children lovingly is a sign of great personal potential in a man. maybe it's the impression her own father left on her.
bolin would be a good brother, or father, too.
it must not have been long since she was last wearing a smile, but as rin cleans the face of the baby-faced youngster next to her, a small grin picks up again.]
Mm, you'd be surprised. I think a few of them [the male heroes.] are scared of me. You're one to talk. I can't be the first girl you've pulled into a chocolates and flowers shop, and you have—
2/2 when will i stop writing you multipart tags, spoon
—a great... personality.
[she flushes, her eyes flickering away, but continues to smile.]
I mean, don't let it go to your head that I said that. I'm just, um, saying it. So take it just as that.
shhh don't
One of his skills is however, being able to take compliments graciously.
His brightens immediately, not at all deterred by Rin's embarrassment. ]
Heh, I won't. But thanks!
Don't fault the guys too much too. [ Moving onto Rin mentioning the Heroes are afraid of her. ] It's pretty easy for guys to get intimidated by girls that they're trying to impress...
[ He knows this from personal experience, but in an attempt to keep up his "cool" image, he mentions instead - ]
Even my brother used to get really awkward and embarrassing, and he's popular with girls without even trying.
;u;
asking him whether he's intimidated by her is on the very tip of her tongue, until she's distracted by something else.]
Your brother...? [she forgets if he ever mentioned his brother.] I don't recall if you've ever told me you had a brother, or not.
[rin thinks about it on a spoonful of soup.]
You must be more put together than he is, even if he's more popular.
[lol]
no subject
No way. ]
Uh... I'd say it's about even.
[ He'll just go with that for now. Bolin might've been a mess of a person when he was younger, but he's gotten his act together now: enrolling in Kuvira's military and helping to stabilize the Earth Kingdom. That's surely doing pretty well.
Regardless, he just shoot Rin a carefree smile before lifting his bowl to drink up the remaining soup, eyes watering from the spices though he enjoys the sensation. ]
Anyway, I'd better get back to cleaning. [ He's pushing himself up now, patting his stomach. ] Thanks for the food! You can bring the dishes back to me when you're done or give me a shout and I'll grab them.
