[Open] The Mapo Tofu affair
Who: Everyone! If you can smell it, you can find it!
When: 6/8-610
Where: Hall of Glory Parlour in Caissa
What: Caren found out she can make mapo tofu and is sharing with everyone. Heaven help us all.
Rating: So far none but will change when things happen.

THe Halls of Glory smell a little different today. Instead of the usual fare that the others might know from the weekly menu, there's a different scent. Something that may remind heroes of Airy, Ma Jiang dishes, or maybe, more simply, of home.
This was the result of Caren's cooking and some hunting on her part. And the results may be quite appealing. There are pots of rice, still steaming, and various bowls filled with the result known as mapo tofu. Some of them are spicer then others, and she hasn't seen fit to label which are very spicy, and which are quite mild. The only thing she has labelled, with a rim of green around the bowls, are the vegan variations, for those who can't, or do not, eat meat or meat by products.
Consider it a game of spice roulette. Because there are other bowls as well, with crushed cucumber-hot pepper salad, spicy tofu, and something that has spewed spinach and garlicy noodles within. But hey! You may be able to cool off with one of the pots of tea around the place-or with one of the rare tubs of ice cream of various flavors, kept chilled with an icy spell.
The cutlery and bowls are disposable, and there are trashbags to clean up after yourself. She's not going to do it for you!
But hey. Who can say no to free food?

Parlour
The sight of Caren jogs her memory enough for her to finally put down her spoon and head in the other young woman's direction.]
Excuse me, Miss Ortensia?
no subject
Caren glances over, curious and her hands coming together to clasp themselves in front of her.]
Yes?
[A pause, before:]
Caren is just fine.
no subject
Caren, then. I'm not sure if you remember me or not, since we only spoke briefly through the Carriers, but I'm Hakuno Kishinami. Um—
[Is there a delicate way to phrase this?]
Is it true you were Gilgamesh's Master in your world too?
no subject
Though this was...she did recall Hakuno, easily enough, but her words were enough to make her eyes widen. If it hadn't been for Nobunaga, she might have even reacted...badly. But now she's aware that there are other worlds related, the 'what if' that the Tohsaka's founder seemed to be so apt at doing.
She takes in a slow breath, and lets it out, settling down. She doesn't need to get into a fight over this. In fact, she can go and kick Gilgamesh's ass later, just for fun.]
Yes, I was.
[A beat, and:]
Did he tell you this?
no subject
[Hakuno nods her head and takes a deep breath, sure into the hem of her coat slightly.
Then she looks up, her normally serene expression schooled into the absolute picture of respect, tinged with sympathy and a fair amount of open admiration.]
Even if the one here isn't the exact same as the one I knew... You really had to put up with a lot, I'm sure. I managed it through a series of events that were unpredictable and uncontrollable, let alone unrepeatable, so—to think that there was another person who could deal with him after all... 'What an amazing person.' It might be a bit presumptuous of me to think something like that, but it was my first reaction all the same.
no subject
She had thought at first that she might have to fight for him, try to keep him close. Instead...what was this admiration? This utter respect? There was a strange expression on her face, a series of mixed feelings in her head, her heart. She'd been feeling more and more strongly lately, where Gilgamesh is concerned.
But she knew he was toying with her a bit, with his calling himself her 'favourite servant' and 'master'. He's fickle and head strong, and in the end, he would easily stick the knife in the back.
Maybe even for a little girl like the one in front of her.]
I think you may be overestimating me. For much of our contract, he was his child self, and that state of being-he is far more manageable. Not that he does not have his shifts of mood, but it is not so violent.
[She lifts her shoulders in a shrug.]
Though your words are kind, perhaps it is you who is the stronger of the two of us. You were the one able to summon him, were you not? I did not even have the power, nor selected, to even do that much.
no subject
[She delicately clears her throat, lifts her chin, narrows her eyes and speaks in a perhaps unsettlingly familiar sneer:] “You lack manners. A lowly mongrel has no right to look on me without permission. I do not permit you commoners to look upon me, nor to make requests of me, nor to speak to me."
[She drops the act, and an embarrassed flush creeps across her cheeks.]
I was literally on the brink of death when I managed to wake him up—in more than one way, since he threatened to tear me into eighths and asked if I was his Master in the same breath—so... well, if I couldn’t look, question, or converse, to obtain those three permissions, I thought that I had to offer my whole self as compensation. After that, for a while he just chose to be a spectator while I struggled against various obstacles.
no subject
Though how she managed to keep him, after using all of the Seals was...something. Then again, he sounded a little bored, if curious as to what sort of person managed to wake him up.]
And so you offered the thing he admires the most: your loyalty. I assume he didn't actually do something perverse, though that is also part of his nature.
[He didn't lie with mongrels after all. Or anything that would cause him disgust. And that would have been this girl at first, until she had proven herself. Or done something to catch his interest.]
Not at first. Did you eventually win his respect?
no subject
[She claps a hand over her mouth, mortified at the slip and desperate not to have a repeat of her meeting with Saber. She removes her hand when she's sure she can control herself.]
God, no, nothing like that. To me. I mean, he demeaned my appearance a lot in various ways, I've seen him perform an AUO Castoff—do not ask, you don't want to know, trust me—and once he asked me about 'which man I would like to be embraced by' when he was bored and wanted to chat, but nothing too bad. I'm clearly not his type.
[A touch of fondness steals across her face, mixed with exasperation.]
I did. It took me just barely dodging death another few times, but I got there. Of course, that means nothing here, since he doesn't have those memories or experiences, but at least I know it's possible.
no subject
If that's where he's nude, believe me. I've seen it. You get used to it.
[She shrugs.]
And the perversion. Though it helps if you hit him. Try yanking his tongue, it's amusing.
[Basically expanding the 'let's torment Gil' club, because it's fun. Still...]
You're right in that it's possible. Would you seek to become his master once again? Or his friend?
[She doesn't care if it's friendship. Even if it is a loose kind, and something that others may have offered. But being a master...that was different.]
no subject
[So very, very shameless.]
If I did that, Im pretty sure he would have killed me for daring to impinge upon the honor of the king, or something.
[She grows a bit more serious, at that question.]
You know... He asked me something like that too. I'll tell you what I told him: even if I somehow had Command Seals, no. From the moment I won the War, I no longer had the need or right to have him as my sword. And... well, in this life, there is only one person that he will ever allow himself to call his friend. But, I guess it would be nice to have a rapport like the old one with him. Even if he's not the same version, he's the sole reason I wasn't erased after having my wish granted by the Grail that created me in the first place.
[She freezes, looking around suddenly, before biting her lip and turning a pleading stare Caren's way.]
Um... that last part, please keep it between us.
no subject
[So shameless.]
I tend to abuse him. Then again, I haven't stomped on him with heels yet. But if I do, he might blush. Again.
[Shameless master right? Something like that. But...ah. That was interesting, and without realizing it, she relaxed slightly. Though this girl was truly...was something, maybe she wouldn't have to worry about her in that way. But she is...]
He ensured that you would continue to exist?
[A chess piece and a threat.]
no subject
[She all but gasped, looking utterly robbed at the fact that she missed such shameless antics.]
...ah, I was right. You really are amazing, to have that sort of sway over him.
[She can't even imagine it, but she's impressed all the same.]
Yeah, he did. Up until that exact moment he did nothing but remind me that death was waiting for me at the end. I was certain of it, and then just when I was beginning to disappear, he decides to burst in and yank me out altogether. He's impossible, I swear.
no subject
[Yup. That's him all right. Shameless. Though being called amazing was...this was so weird. So weird. The hell.
But...]
Did he take your place?
no subject
[Good God. A maid outfit.]
He didn't, no. He one-sidedly barged in, one-sidedly snapped me up, and then one-sidedly stormed off before I could understand what was happening. We were on his ship lightyears and lightyears away from the Moon Cell last I remember.
no subject
[She can still remember how his stockings looked over his thighs.]
...Ah. I forgot about his ship.
[Right, he had that during that one fight....]
But that sounds like him. Taking what is his. Or what he thinks is his. You're one of his treasures, you realize? And you likely will be this ones too before long.
no subject
[Hakuno rocks back on her heels at those words, physically taken aback. She never—never—not once, ever thought of herself in those terms.]
His—
[Her voice comes out faint, stuttered, incredulous.]
One of his—no. No, I don't think so. Mm-mm. I'm not... I've seen his standards, I couldn't be that highly valued.
[Except... he sacrificed a great deal of his Vault for her, didn't he? The memory clearly tips the scale, her expression sliding from shocked to uncertain.]
...you really think so?
no subject
[That's...one thing to think of it. Gil, in a maid's dress, truly it's amazing. But more importantly...well.]
He values you enough that he would take you on his ship, ensure that you did not die, and he used something precious of his in order to make sure you did not get erased.
If nothing else, you replaced what he has lost. What it could become, I can not be certain. What you could become is also uncertain.
no subject
...I... This is not something I've ever thought about.
[You blew her mind, congratulations. She fiddles with the cuffs of her jacket, flustered beneath that blank facade.]
You have a way of speaking that cuts straight to the bone, Miss Caren.
no subject
You haven't had a chance to.
[Her mouth quirks, and she offers, a slight tilt of her head.]
But you could say that I have a way of getting to the heart of the matter. And again, Caren is fine. There's no need for formalities.
no subject
[Hakuno smiles, then—really, smiles, with teeth and sincerity that she just can't tamp down on, filled to the bursting point with all sorts of feelings. But the top two contenders are gratitude and admiration, still.]
Thank you, Caren.
no subject
[She slips a little closer so she can, for a moment, touch her face. Just ever so lightly, and in passing over her cheek.]
You are an interesting girl. I'm looking forward to seeing your progress.
no subject
[Hakuno flushes at the gentle touch, just the way she had the first time she ever met the Rin Tohsaka of the 2030s. God, why do girls have to be so pretty?]
I-I'll do my best not to disappoint!
no subject
[Her hand drops, and she steps away, seeming ready to move on now.]
I'm sure that no matter what you do, you will not disappoint me.
no subject
[Hakuno regains some of her composure, now that there isn't a pretty woman invading her personal space and destroying her ability to think rationally. Some, which is why that quip slips out, instead of staying safe in her head.]
