[Open] The Mapo Tofu affair

Who: Everyone! If you can smell it, you can find it!
When: 6/8-610
Where: Hall of Glory Parlour in Caissa
What: Caren found out she can make mapo tofu and is sharing with everyone. Heaven help us all.
Rating: So far none but will change when things happen.

THe Halls of Glory smell a little different today. Instead of the usual fare that the others might know from the weekly menu, there's a different scent. Something that may remind heroes of Airy, Ma Jiang dishes, or maybe, more simply, of home.

This was the result of Caren's cooking and some hunting on her part. And the results may be quite appealing. There are pots of rice, still steaming, and various bowls filled with the result known as mapo tofu. Some of them are spicer then others, and she hasn't seen fit to label which are very spicy, and which are quite mild. The only thing she has labelled, with a rim of green around the bowls, are the vegan variations, for those who can't, or do not, eat meat or meat by products.

Consider it a game of spice roulette. Because there are other bowls as well, with crushed cucumber-hot pepper salad, spicy tofu, and something that has spewed spinach and garlicy noodles within. But hey! You may be able to cool off with one of the pots of tea around the place-or with one of the rare tubs of ice cream of various flavors, kept chilled with an icy spell.

The cutlery and bowls are disposable, and there are trashbags to clean up after yourself. She's not going to do it for you!

But hey. Who can say no to free food?

[Vietnam would eat everything, but right now, she's a little wary because of these post-it notes. Why would they actually be here? And then she sees someone nearby, looking like they have had one too many of the "Not Even God Can Save Your Stomach".]

Are you...alright? [She asks as she makes her approach.]

[ She takes another sip of her tea before looking up. ]

Hello.

[ says Irisviel weakly as tries to give her best smile. ]

Are you here for the mapo tofu?
hoasen: (questions)

[personal profile] hoasen 2016-06-08 10:23 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I did come to investigate what was being served...

[She's no stranger to mapo tofu, however--]

...Did you eat the one that is apparently disastrous?
soulshift: (pic#10299211)

[personal profile] soulshift 2016-06-08 07:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I did. The chef is apparently a fan of making it spicy beyond this world.

[ That was an understatement, but for Irisviel with her limited experience of food, that was what it was like. ]

Are you a fan of spices at all? Perhaps you may find it more enjoyable than me, I am not so used to human food.
hoasen: (A BARGAIN WHERE?)

[personal profile] hoasen 2016-06-10 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Really...? [Okay now she has to give it a taste later, having the power to withstand fiery cooking thanks to the creation of curries. But at the same time...is it Sichuan style. Is it worse than Sichuan style? The Japanese style had often been a little weaker than the original mapo, while the Korean version probably added 500 more spices. It certainly can't be England level of death, because that's not food.]

I can eat anything, usually. So I enjoy spices. But oh? You were not human?

Yes, I don't quite understand it myself. But being able to eat anything seems lucky...

[ But to address Vietnam's question... ]

But no, I am not human. I'm a construct - a homunculus. Please don't let it bother you, but it means that I'm unaccustomed to some traditions.

[ And with that, she gives a short bow. ]

My name is Irisviel von Einzbern.
hoasen: (echo)

[personal profile] hoasen 2016-06-12 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
You mean you weren't eating before either?

[And look, she's not human either--actually she should tell her that.] Homunculus, I see... [She never would've thought it possible.] I am not human either, so I think I understand.

[She bows her head politely back--] It is nice to meet you, Irisviel von Einzbern. My name is Vietnam.

Vietnam? The country?

[ All she knows about Vietnam the country was that it was near Japan and they had lots of noodles. But this was all from a book that Kiritsugu gave her to educate her on the basics of geography. ]

I guess if you are the country that means we're almost in the same boat.

[ She thinks?? She's not one to presume, but she gives a short bow of her own in turn. ]
hoasen: (cloudless)

[personal profile] hoasen 2016-06-13 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
[That book is totally not even wrong. Good job book!]

Vietnam the country. And yes, I suppose it is! I am an immortal being who is tied to the land, similar to an embodiment, but probably more like a spirit. My body functions similarly to that of a humans, though, so I did have to eat and drink before.

[An immortal feeling hunger is the weirdest thing ever.] I hope it is not too difficult so far?

[personal profile] soulshift 2016-06-13 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh... so perhaps you are the same manner of being as Servants from my world.

[ She nods, with understanding. Irisviel is a magecraft construct and she knows far more about magecraft than she does about the actual world, so Vietnam's explanation doesn't go over her head. ]

They are embodiments of legends or myths, tied to the world yet not truly a part of it.
hoasen: (seek)

[personal profile] hoasen 2016-06-14 11:24 am (UTC)(link)
[Vietnam's eye twitches slightly, because while she can see her connection to the world like a Servant, her existence doesn't depend on a "master" or is controlled despite all countries following their bosses. In short, she's going to kick its ass, and you can thank Gilgamesh for telling her.

It's still an apt comparison though. They're all still bound to something!]

Like Gilgamesh, a legend. [She nods slowly.] I was informed, though I always have been curious over the selection process. He claims it is because humanity needs him. Which I suppose is similar to why we come about, because civilisation exists.

Are you one too? A Servant? [Even though she's a homunculus? Does she need to save Irisviel as well?!]

Gilgamesh...

[ Now it's Irisviel's turn to have her eye twitch slightly. Gilgamesh was in her world a disagreeable ass who kept making passes at Saber.

Not like that's any different now, mind. But she quickly regains her composure and smiles at Vietnam. ]

The history of the Holy Grail War is rather complicated, but Heroic Spirits are somewhere called the Throne of Heroes. Masters summon them through the use of an artefact, an object link to their legend. I do not know what Tokiomi Tohsaka had to summon Gilgamesh, but my husband had Avalon - the sheath of King Arthur, to summon Saber.

[ Ah, Kiritsugu... Irisviel doesn't need saving. At least, not in this world. She's always grateful that Kiritsugu agreed to represent the Einzberns during the war. Otherwise it would have been down to her. But that is something she'd rather not think about. ]

It is up to them to heed that call but they have their own motivations and wishes for the Grail.

[Judging from Irisviel's reaction, Gilgamesh's reputation as a tyrant precedes him.] He told me of his fearsome reputation. You need not hold back, he certainly doesn't. [And he's actually good to her.]

Throne of Heroes... [So that is where they disappear off to. But hearing of how Irisviel's husband was the one who summoned, she's probably not a Servant--wait a minute.] Saber is a Servant as well? And...[She raises her eyebrow.] Is related to the Arthurian legend? [The Grail itself is Arthurian legend. What exactly is going on?]

Gilgamesh said he had no use for the grail despite it being in his possession. But what of your husband and Saber? Why do they summon and heed the call?

Gilgamesh certainly suit his name as the King of Kings. You should ask him about the Meeting of Kings he participated in.

[ GOLDY IS A BUTT. But Irisviel laughs gently. Poor Vietnam... to be subjected to that already. ]

I suppose... since true names are less of a concern here, If you'd like to know her real name, perhaps it would be best to ask her. But she is related to the Arthurian legend.

[ It's clear from her expression that she's immensely fond of Saber. But Vietnam's question makes her pause and stop for a little bit, putting a hand to her chest. ]

My family was one of the original magi families who devised the Holy Grail War. But we didn't have much luck, so my husband, instead of me was chosen to fight in the War. I...

[ She pauses, her expression unusually flat compared to how it previously was expressive. ]

I am the vessel for the Holy Grail. The Grail would be embodied through me into the world once someone was the victor.

Meeting of Kings? Is this a battle? I will ask anyway.

[She's seen Some Things so this sounds like a battle. Don't worry for her, Iri, Vietnam's got ways to deal with the gold butt! Sadly she adores him and it's really gross.]

Only if she wishes to share. I will not push if she does not want to. [Vietnam even manages a smile. Saber is pleasant, even with her healthy appetite, spending time with Saber is enjoyable. Now she listens patiently, so that she can learn more about this Grail to--

NEVER MIND. SHE CAN'T DESTROY THE GRAIL NOW. She needs to find another way...]
I promised Gilgamesh that I will go with him to be his "master" [She even wiggles her fingers to show that she thinks binding these legends is all crap.] to free him of his chains. How do I do this and free you from the grail's fate too?

[One stone two birds. Irisviel has only been good to everyone here by suffering the fate of the mapo tofu and is politely talking to her now. In the words of the modern youth: The Holy Grail can suck a dick.]

It doesn't matter so much in this world, where our existence is not tied to one thing such as the Grail.

[ says Iri after a long moment of contemplation, her tea warm in her hands. She takes a sip, trying to clear out her thoughts. ]

You are not contracted to Gilgamesh in the same way that he was contracted to Tokiomi Tohsaka. No matter what he says, no matter what protection he offers you. Archers by the nature of their class have a skill known as "Independent Action", they are able to move without being tied to their Master. Indeed, it wouldn't surprise me if Gilgamesh was able to achieve independence somehow...

[ If it was going to be someone, it might be him. After all, he had the most power by the virtue of his Noble Phantasm. ]

Has he told you about the classes?

But one day we will all return home, and this cycles begins again, no? Victory is achieved through preparation. You and your husband won't have to worry about this any more too.

[If there's a way...well, she's always taken her chances. It's how she's gotten this far too. Not to mention, her entire being should be back to normal then too.]

I understand. This world is not like the other, as you said, so right now it is just a promise. [She crosses her arms and taps her chin.] So they have particular skills...and he is...an Archer? Saber, Archer... [Hmm...what about Assassin and Berserker, she wonders...and this Independent Action. In a way this relieves her to know that he could be free in some way or another.]

No. He has not yet told me about the details of this battle, nor what should be done. So I know not of the classes.

[She didn't really push at the time having just found out he was more a King of Slaves, so it wasn't because he wouldn't tell her. She only needed to ask.]
