All this bad blood here: Open job post!
Who: Caren and you!
When: After the War, 4/20-4/30
Where: Graupera, Gresser, Palamede
What: Job stuff, including getting yelled at, meeting Servants, all that jazz.
Rating: Pretty sure we got into Rated R for fetish talk and violent thoughts in the Gilgamesh thread there
I: Vessel of hope
[It was an unusual request, but she didn't think it would be one that she could by pass. While there were some parts of the order and the church that she held in contempt, she was a priestess, through and through. Her offering was a simple one, a plain boat with a puffin candle, white and sheltered by slender glass.
A touch of mana lights it with a murmured word. And when the sun goes down, she's there with the rest of the crowd. Her boat is set down, and she starts to sing.
It's a surprisingly lovely, sweet voice-and her singing is in Latin. They are hymns, songs of mourning and blessing, things that one might hear at a funeral.
Her eyes flick to anyone who approaches. She may cease, continue until she is finished, or start singing instead 'Amazing Grace' as an invitation for anyone to join her, if they so wish.]
II: A six pack is worth a thousand pictures
A
Ah. That would be perfect.
[She nods to herself, as she focuses with her camera. This is an odd thing to take a photo off...perhaps it is of a hay bale, a plate of food, or a child crying after falling on their knees and skinning it. Really weird pictures like that. But it's not the only things she's taking a picture of. See that fountain? She's pointing you, hero, to stand underneath it.]
If you don't mind? I'd like a picture of you under the spray. I think it would be very appealing.
B
[She's hungry, but she as to pay for her meal before she has to actually gets anything. She's frowning at the riddle she was offered. It's rather...well, it's not a bad one, but she doesn't want to give up either. It's down on a piece of paper, and she's staring at it, as if it will give it answers.]
I know the answer. Just...need a moment.
[She scowls down at the paper. The locals, at least, seem amused by her. She's intelligent enough, but mostly she's stuck. She needs some orange juice or something to get her brain working but noooo, stupid town rule won't let her have it.]
III: Rebuild Palamede!
A
[She had been moping, as the usual. She was not a strong woman as things went, but she could clean. She was used to it, as things went, but the fact that the local that was showing her around didn't want to come in here...she respected that, and didn't press, for once. Caren could be surprisingly compassionate to those in need.
Which did not mean she would be so nice to those passing by. If anyone tried to walk through her recently washed floor for example...all it would take was a twist of her wrist, and she'd fling mop water at their head. With the mop.
This is slightly better than having her try and recruit someone to help her clean.]
B
[Caren hadn't asked for this. Her face was impassive as the man in front of her-heavier by over a hundred pounds, taller than a foot, maybe more. His mouth was hitched in a permanent smirk on one side, due to scarring. And, he seemed, he didn't have anything to laugh about. People had been hurt. And these heroes, these people God selected were supposed to keep them safe! They were supposed to do better then this!
There was a crowd forming because of this. And while Caren had been singing hymns and other things earlier, she had been heading in for a break. But now...
She watched him, and slowly brought a hand up to wipe at the spittle on her face. She was smiling, a little. Maybe someone wants to watch or...try to step in before something terrible happens.]

And yet, listening to the sad melody coming from the girl's lips as more boats are added in she finds herself wanting to join in. It's a beautiful but morose sight to see the specks of light from the candles settled inside. It's even more melancholy to see children participating.
The girl is singing alone but once she hits a song Asuna knows in "Amazing Grace" she can't let her go on solo anymore. Although she starts off humming along, eventually Asuna's gentle singing voice joins Caren's from just a few feet away. ]
no subject
It was mildly surprising to find another able to join in the songs she knew-or at least with Amazing Grace. Maybe it shouldn't be. Such things, be they song or otherwise, could certainly cross worlds. Maybe.
Slowly, they came to a close together. Caren had to swallow; her throat felt dry.Her fault for singing so much.]
I'm surprised. I didn't know others knew the song.
[Asuna...is not of her world, she thinks. Servants, least those she knew, were more likely to be pagen, and or think the Church song something to tolerate at best and not join in. Magi tended not to be churchgoers for good reason.
Caren's golden eyes swept over the young woman, curious as to who she was.]
no subject
I'm as surprised as you are but you sang Amazing Grace very well. You have a lovely voice. Um, sorry for joining without asking.
no subject
I suppose it's one of those things that cross worlds.
[Her shoulders lift in a slight shrug.]
But...I do not mind. It certainly affects more people than a single strange singer, out by the water.
no subject
You're no more strange than anybody else here, I think. [ She moves from her spot and kneels a little closer to Caren. ]
I'm Asuna, by the way. What's your name?
no subject
[Her voice was a touch wry, but other than that, she was amused. Her eyes flicked over to take Asuna in.]
Caren. It's Caren.
no subject
[ Especially here in Caissa. Her expression softens. ]
Nice to meet you, Caren. [ She tries it without honorifics first, getting used to not using them the more she spends time here. The more people she meets that have no idea what they mean. ]
You're not a famous singer, are you?
[ Idols are a thing. ]
no subject
And you.
[Offered a small nod. Honorfics would have been fine, but it was up to Asuna.]
I'm not a famous singer. Merely a priestess. Are there famous singers among the heroes here?
no subject
[ That doesn't matter, she's more curious about PRIESTESS. ]
Does that mean you worship at a shrine?
[ The priestess she knows of are the miko. ]
no subject
[Most likely a certain golden slacker would have been there...but Asuna's question was answered with a head shake.]
I'm part of the Holy Church.
no subject
Oh. [ Christian then, maybe. Or a religion she has no idea about. She's learning all about the gods and goddesses of Blanc. And she had been told she could be greater than them.
By Gil. What's his deal anyway ]
Isn't becoming a priestess difficult?
no subject
But ah. All she knows so far is that she hasn't seen a hide or hair of them, and supposedly they were the reason they were here in the first place.
Not by Gil, but by someone else with fantastic hair.]
That depends on what you mean. I've lived within the confines of the church most of my life, so what may be difficult for others...
[She lifted her shoulders in a shrug.]
May have been something I learned earlier in my life.
[Though it might have been hard, but PSH. She wasn't going to say that at all.]
no subject
She lived in a church for most of her life? That does sound hard?? That sounds LONELY. And she knows lonely ok
But they're kind of similar then, aren't they? Since being brought here, she has a freedom she's not used to. Now Caren doesn't have to live within a church and she has freedom.
Unless she liked it. ]
... Is it difficult now? Being away from the church? [ ... Ah. ]
Sorry, I shouldn't be asking these things. You don't have to tell me. [ Maybe she'll just MAKE A BOAT. ]
no subject
But hey look now they have something to bond over and they can be BESTIES.
Sort of, kind of, not really. It is a little strange, not to have the church at her back these days.]
No...no, you're quite free to wonder Asuna. I am...uncertain, and off balance. I used to be certain of my purpose, what I was supposed to do.
[Caren's shoulders lift in a shrug.]
Should I establish a new Church? Should I be meek and wait for my time?
[She takes in a slow breath and shudders.]
Not to mention that I...am not used to crowds. It is discomforting at best.
[SO ABOUT THEM BOATS. HMMM. INTERESTING.]
no subject
But at least Caren reassures her. It still seems invasive but she's given an answer anyway. It sounds a lot like how she felt when she first came to Caissa too. Asuna was very certain of her position in life.
And then she had no idea what to do? Fight in a war? Be a hero? How could she do those things?
ABOUT THEM BOATS... nevermind the boats. A hand touches Caren's shoulder gently and it is warm. ]
But you came out here to honor those who have fallen. It's a good place to start, isn't it?
no subject
But...ah. Caren blinks up at Asuna, startled to the point of blinking up at her with big gold eyes. So much for more boat building.]
They're grieving. Where else would I be?
no subject
Her shoulders shrug. ]
Good question. [ If it was her, newly arrived, she's not sure if she would be out here helping boats sail. She would be grieving her losses.
Caren is out here for others. A true priestess. Her hand falls away from her shoulder and she reaches for boat materials. ]
Would you like to make one together?
no subject
I find that being productive helps. So...yes.
[She offers a gentle touch, a squeeze of Asuna's arm. As if Caren is a decent human being under it all. She'll learn, sooner or later.]
I'd like that.
no subject
That just leads her to believe Caren is a lot stronger than she is. She had to learn how to move on and keep moving, she needed a push. Or maybe she would have figured it out eventually.
Either way, the fact that she understands what Caren is going through makes her want to help.
So that's why she lets Caren return the touch before shuffling over closer and getting started. Friend... ]
Do you sing a lot as a priestess?
no subject
Poor Asuna. She actually thinks she's an actual person with actual feelings. Which she does but they're...far too twisted up inside to be considered normal. Like this. The touching. The attempt for warmth.
It just makes Caren want to ruin her day.]
No more then the average priestess. I was more likely to get on the organ and play. But with its absence, I have to work with what I can.
[Just like with the boat. That needed to carefully done and made, though she wasn't planning to add anything to it. Sea shells? Who needed sea shells.]
no subject
Oh! It's not an organ, but I'm pretty sure I've seen a piano in the Music Room in the Hall of Glory. I could show you... if you don't know where to go.
[ Sea shells only if they're from the sea shore. And only sold by Sally.
Caren may not want to add things but Asuna has some flowers on hand she starts tucking into the sides for decoration, little buds of color. ]
no subject
I wasn't aware that there was a piano. However...I could give it a try.
[It'd take some adjustment, especially with pianos and organs being so different. But perhaps Asuna will hear some aching melody soon.
But she's going to hold the boat still for a few moments, before she adds, ]
How shall we...add the light to this, you think? A candle? Flash light? Mana?
no subject
It's worth a shot, right?
[ They are different instruments but Asuna knows what it's like to miss things from home. Maybe just playing music will help her. Just hearing someone speak in Japanese helped her a little.
If playing REALLY ACHINGLY SAD SONGS WILL HELP HER THEN ]
Hmmmm... [ She wants to try something. Muttering under her breath, she touches the paper boat gently. A small glow appears where she's brushed her fingers, and then it spreads all over, making it glow gently as if it was enchanted.
Asuna sighs and then smiles softly. ]
Holy magic seems fitting for a boat made by a priestess, right?
[ A very simple and basic Holy magic. She's just a Pawn. ]
no subject
It can't hurt.
[She could speak Japanese if Asuna wanted it. But hey, playing achingly sad songs that made people feel as if their hearts were breaking? Don't mind if she does!
It could perk her up for an hour or two at least. But more importantly, Asuna makes the boat glow. No candle to be lost and dampened at see. At least the basic of basic holy magics can stick on the boat for awhile.]
Ah...so it is.
[Her lips curve into a smile briefly.]
Did someone teach you, or did you learn on your own?
no subject
Is that smile even real? ASUNA THINKS IT IS ]
I usually try and learn magic on my own. The learning curve is more intuitive than you would expect but what's available in the library helps, too.
[ She sets the boat in the water before giving it a little push, watching it float along the surface. ]
Should we sing again?
