[ If he really considers the environment and all the scenarios he's been a part of or witnessed this festival so far, the fact he hasn't been crashed into yet is something of a miracle.

Even so, it's automatically, of course, still a bit frustrating to get unexpectedly knocked into. The flurry of red envelopes only adds to fuel that feeling when one manages to smack him right in the face. He successfully grabs it before it can get away, looking wholly unimpressed as he identifies the envelope as part of the festivities while apologies are already filling the air. Putting his free hand up, Guren interrupts—
]

It's fine, I got it. [ meaning he will just help the other with this and there is no need to dwell further on the matter. Come to think of it, though, the apology does sound familiar, although it could be an overactive imagination due to Shinya mentioning Yoichi being present in this place, too.

But, even so... Guren stops reaching for any extra rogue letters to get a good look at the other scrambling for them now—
]

Yoichi [ Guren reaches out to swat the teenager in the head with the flat of the envelope he's holding to get his attention. It's not violent but it's not exactly playful or otherwise ignorable. ], there you are.

[ he sighs, looking towards the envelopes scattered and littering the ground surrounding them. ] Why am I not surprised at this?

[ that could mean so many things coming from anyone right now, but the LTC especially. It's hard to even tell if the words are meant to be reprimanding or something fonder, such as a greeting.

(The envelopes? The mess? The clumsiness? The rambling apologies that are pretty much an automatic response from this kid concerning almost anything?

And that's only a handful of possibilities.)

[ The greeting may be half-assed and unenthusiastic, hardly reassuring to most people, but as soon as Yoichi hears it, muttered in that familiar annoyed voice, he perks up, entirely forgetting the scattered envelopes. Who cares about those when his recently vampire-napped commanding officer is here in front of him, hale and whole?

Really, if Guren wasn't grumbling about something, he'd think it was a pod person. Having Guren sound so lackadaisical about this is really the best thing he could have asked for.
]

Lieutenant Colonel! [ Is that some suspicious wetness at the corner of Yoichi's eyes? A little wobble to his voice, born of relief at seeing Guren okay instead of being tortured or worse? ] You're not dead!

[ Guren's lucky that Yoichi still has an armful of envelopes or he might be getting hugged right now. ]

[ that thing Yoichi's doing with his eyes, hasn't he seen that plenty of times before Yuu has ended up taken out dealing with squishy-feely emotional outbursts?

While it is absolutely acceptable to watch Yuu suffer through all of that, Guren is feeling a little glad that the envelopes are a deterrent for such a response. ...Still, thinking back on the last time he saw the other and the entire situation, he can't bring himself to bully him right now over his reaction. While he had no plans of dying back there if it could be helped, things turned so quickly on the battlefield.
]

Yeah, although that may be partly in thanks to whatever the hell brought us all here. Hopefully it's not worse than what we left. [ timing is everything; as Shinya had pointed out earlier, things had gone downhill fast.

A derisive snort escapes the lieutenant colonel.
]

—Saying it like you did just now, though--'not dead'-- makes it sound way more like a bad thing. It sounds fake.

[ Reaching out now, Guren places a hand gently on Yoichi's head, offering a small smile. His tone adjusts accordingly, also. That slightly weary look accompanying the smile? It's relief. ]

—Just kidding. I'm glad to see you made it.

[ who cares what or how, he's here and in one piece. He doesn't know what happened to the rest of the kids, but Yoichi is at least now one less to worry about. ]

O-of course it's not a bad thing, sir!

[ Even with that swift reassurance, it's too late. The damage has been done. Yoichi's lip trembles. He looks stricken, aghast at having even maybe, possibly at all implied that Guren showing up is anything less than a miracle, that he's not all kinds of glad and relieved to see his commanding officer alive and well.

The pile of envelopes in Yoichi's arms trembles, too. Yoichi's just barely holding himself back, torn about what to do — should he keep trying to gather the envelopes up, abandon them entirely, something else?

In the end, he opts for dropping the whole pile of them without a care for their contents at all.

With his arms empty, it leaves him free to fling himself at Guren. Forget propriety or being a little scared of Guren, he's too relieved to remember manners right now. Guren is getting hugged whether he likes it or not. And probably gifted with a little snot and tears on his shirt as the waterworks kick in.
]

I'm— I'm sorry, but... we thought you were dead. We thought we left you! And you're alive, it's definitely not a bad thing!

[ Even Guren can't argue about saying he deserves this reaction and consequence. Looks like he took the teasing a little too far, but then again, he isn't quite aware of apparently how... upset he's left his kids by apparently never escaping the vampires, after all.

(This is bad, he really doesn't need to know these kinds of things, it makes decisions in the long run incredibly harder.)

Still, he's taken aback enough by Yoichi's boldness, causing them both to end up on the ground now. He's better than Yuu at this sort of thing, though, and makes a point not to get his head thwacked on the street in the process. For a second or two, he's not sure what to do but, contrary to the facade he puts up, he's not heartless when it really counts. Yelling at the other here won't benefit him in any way (Yoichi is definitely the one yelling at probably works the least with), so instead he sighs, settling his hand back on Yoichi's head, resigned to the snot and tears that are going to be staining his shirt now. Being a parent is hard.
]

Honestly... you kids are hopeless, crying over your superior. What am I going to do with you? [ Guren can't make promises about back home, but he had not actually resigned to his fate. It's just... he can't talk about that. His expression
flickers as he lets his thoughts linger a little longer.

Guren mostly ignores any passers by who feel a need to be nosey, giving them an intimating glance to accelerate their moving along,letting Yoichi have his moment to sob freely.

When his crying starts to calm down, Guren takes the moment to give a reassuring pat on Yoichi's back.
]

...What's the last thing you remember, anyway?

[ The reassuring pat on his back, so gentle, so kind! So unlike Guren! nearly sets Yoichi off again. He has to take a moment to sniffle, fighting back another waterfall of tears. Here he is, being hopeless, crying over his presumed-dead superior and he can barely hold back the flood of relief. At least Guren seems willing to put up with it for the moment, even if Yoichi's scrambling to get himself together before Guren's patience, not exactly long at the best of times, runs out.

He squeezes dad Guren again, all his efforts at calming down nearly undone, but finally gets a hold of himself. Carefully, a little shame-faced at how he's tackled Guren in the middle of the street, he sits up and quickly scrambles off of Guren, trying to help Guren stand up.
]

S-sorry, um. [ He winces; how do you tell your recently returned from the dead commanding officer that the last thing you did was go against the army you both belong to? Just spitting it out, Yoichi guesses. ] Y-you got c-captured and then Mika-kun showed up and we, um. Didn't want him to get killed and Yuu-kun was in really bad shape...

[ Or just talk around it. That works, too. ]

[ Guren isn't sure how much more of this kind proper indulging style of parenting he can take with this, but the last squeeze from his son Yoichi comes with him also managing to get a hold of himself. Which means Guren has no need to do anything that would cause more tears.

At least Guren doesn't actually care about the people around them. He takes Yoichi's help to get up, bringing a hand to settle on the teenager's head at the apology, before going to start walking. He hopes he doesn't have to prompt his subordinate to follow. Even if they are in a completely foreign world, they shouldn't stand around and talk in one place too long.

Yes, sorry, Yoichi, leave your letters and let's go.

Luckily, the walk is a slow one; so, while Yoichi is attempting to answer, there's no chance Guren might somehow outpace and leave him behind. Guren also doesn't need to stop short or turn to continue the conversation. While they continue fthe lieutenant commander does glance from the corner of his eyes down towards the other.

Remind him never to send this kid on any mission where they need to lie or otherwise conceal some sort of information.
]

And...?

[ This sounds like it's going to turn into something he's not going to be okay with. ]
