It's wish fulfillment for the guys that watch it. It's usually one dude that's like... not super special in any way who keeps happening on a bunch of girls that are interested in him for some reason or another. Usually they end up all living with him in one place, but sometimes it all just happens at school. Most of the time there's like... magic powers or they're aliens or something to actually drive the plot or conflict cuz otherwise it'd just be some boring show about a dude with a bunch of girlfriends that keeps pretending he doesn't want at least one of them. The girls usually fight over him. Like I said, it's kinda gross wish fulfillment.
