intro ♚ may

We’ve all had those dreams: you wake up on a table, to blurry, ominous images and the certainty that you are absolutely buck-naked in a room full of strangers. This is not quite it.
Instead, you come awake to the sun on your face. The soft burble of water nearby. The hustle and bustle of a busy street and the faint, fortifying smell of bread. You open your eyes and there’s no one there at your bedside, but there is what appears to be the end of the world happening just beyond your window.
There’s a crack in the world across the sky, the “sun” is the totally unnatural light spilling from that crack straight into your eyes, and someone’s left a neatly pressed and folded uniform at the foot of the bed that isn’t yours. Somewhere in the room, there’s a strange clatter like beads, the click of claws on the floor.
Something’s in here with you.
Also, you are naked.

ONE ♟ P.S. I Love You
It's a perfectly ordinary morning in Caissa. Enprise’s two suns peer over the horizon and smack into your face through the large bay window. At half past six in the morning, the floor nanny’s built-in alarm goes off and plays Prime Minister Teddy’s hit song Love Me Like Your Doughnuts. Once everyone in their rooms is up and awake, this mechanical pigeon announces that letters and small packages have been delivered to every Hero’s personal box in the mailroom. Yes, even you, Naked Newcomer! These letters are from the Heroes’ many fans all over Blanc. No matter who you are, there are small tokens of appreciation attached to the letters: these may include candies shaped like stars, chocolates with a surprise gooey center, or even a can of rainbow beans for those not fond of sweets.
Letters for veteran Heroes are full of praise and gratitude for the success of the naval battle at Graupera. New Heroes receive mail that express support towards their future endeavors as the Blanc military’s most formidable task force. That’s not all the letters contain, however; the citizens also plead for our Heroes’ help with new problems that have arisen in the fields surrounding Caissa. However, the details the letters provide are scant and vague. The fans seem more concerned with recent damage caused by some unknown entity. There is a 15-page narrative of how a man built this beautiful house for his lovely, sweet wife who did nothing wrong, but nothing about why the house is in shambles now. A market on the outskirts of Caissa lost 30,000 colle’s worth of food, but the writer neglects to explain what happened to the food. All you know is that this person stayed up all week taking inventory and now it has gone to waste.
Sharing letters with each other might give you a clue on where to start your investigations and figure out which areas were hit the hardest. Or you can talk about how cute your adoring fans are. One way or another, you’ll have to get tongues wagging to make any progress. Unfortunately, Blanc isn’t going to save itself and from the sound of it, this problem is bigger than expected...

TWO ♟ Distant Howling
After pooling information, the new objective is clear: to investigate the damages. The vast, vibrant fields around Caissa seem a good place to start. They are mostly empty, but here or there you will see some people from nearby smaller villages and farms. The villagers will admit to having seen threatening shadows move over the fields and having heard harsh, high-pitched howling. They are willing to point Heroes toward possible shadow sightings, but are otherwise reluctant to act as guides. They are simple townsfolk who wish to return to their quiet lifestyle.
You may come up with small settlements (e.g. villages, farms, inns, taverns, etc.) as they are considered minor locations.
Heroes will soon discover that some of the smaller villages have been burned down entirely. The smell of ash and charred wood is thick in the air, though some buildings are also smashed as as though by something large and heavy. Nearby trees which haven’t been uprooted or knocked over are scorched and their blackened branches crackle ominously in the breeze. There are large marks dug deep into the ground and—is that a cow? Heroes will find tagged fruit cows scattered everywhere, scared, confused and mooing sadly next to their dead fruit cow friends. Fruit cows are usually found in Gresser, how strange...
A couple of days’ worth of exploration may help you realize that whatever is terrorizing Blanc doesn’t only devour hapless animals. While trying to navigate the numerous backcountry roads and farmlands, Heroes may stumble upon some gruesome clues: a charred limb—or what’s left of it; teeth, half-eaten ribcages, melted jewelry, and other smaller bits; the less fortunate may actually trip over a corpse staring unseeingly into the sky. It has been gutted, half-roasted, and seems to have lain in the sun for some time; and if someone is brave enough to roll the body onto its stomach, they may discover claw marks on its back. The victim must have tried to flee from something.
The amount of damage grows the more our Heroes travel south. What could be awaiting them?

THREE ♟ Breath of Fire
Let’s put the clues together. Fire? Check. Claw marks? Check. Large shadows seemingly from something flying overhead? Check and check. Congratulations, Blanc, you are suffering from a dragon plague.
It will take several days for the Heroes to locate the source of the rumors. The dragons seem to have taken up residence in the hilly area near Caissa, where the slopes grow steeper and then drop suddenly off into cliffs. The beasts are quite willing to greet guests warmly: there’s nothing like a burst of dragonfire and a deafening screech to brighten your day.
The only warning you’ll get before they launch themselves into the air and at Heroes is the sound of trees bursting beneath their claws. Beware: a single swipe can cause some serious damage and their fire breath, fast, frequent and garnished with the occasional, boiling hot drop of saliva, is nothing you want to stick around for. The dragons cannot be reasoned with, nor can they be tamed. A queen’s Charm magic WILL NOT work. Should someone try and reach out with their senses to see if the dragons are somehow hurting, they will only feel something alien and terrible.
Heroes aren't the only ones suffering under the dragons’ claws, unfortunately. Scattered around the area are a few small and isolated farms, and the animals and the farmers are easy prey and unlikely to flee in time. Heroes will want to intervene before the dragons can devour and destroy. If they are too late, they will need to provide support. Put out fires, heal the injured, catch panicked cows before they become pot roast! The dragons might be coming around for another attack, so it would be a good time to test barriers and other damage control skills.
To make matters worse, Blanc’s weather has decided that now is the perfect time for a hailstorm. It’s barely anything at first, beginning with small kernels the size of corn here and there to wet the grass and ruin your footing. Then it becomes much larger and greater in number. Dragons are not exempt from this hailhole: large enough pieces may rip holes in their wings! Heroes may want to use this to their advantage; additionally, casting ice and wind spells will suddenly become a lot easier, and the dragons will struggle to navigate in the stormy weather, forcing them to land more often. Better get up on that dragon’s back!
In the end, survivors of the dragon horde let out one last, collective shriek before they turn southward. The battle has been won, but the war is just beginning: the dragons have only been chased away. Their nest seems to be elsewhere and that is a worrying prospect. Dragons aren’t native to Blanc, which can only mean one thing…
Meanwhile, a new job opening has appeared at Gresser. At least you finally know what to do with all those fruit cows.

[ Kojirou is flirting incredibly close with death here, sure. But isn't that merely a day in the life of a warrior? Perhaps that's why Maki here is a King, so she can sit far away from the battle.
He digs his heels into the ground as the dragon rears its head, jets of flame flaring out from its nostrils as it prepares to scorch everything in its path with way too much fire. Staying right in its path should be suicide... It should be, but Kojirou stands fast, the wooden sword in his hand glowing with elemental mana, drawn from his flag and the storm around them.
The fireball launches right at him, the newest target of the dragon's ire now that Maki was out of sight and not attacking the dragon. If he were an ordinary human he would surely be dead. Nobody could be fast enough to get out of way. Thankfully, he's not an ordinary human. ]
Secret Technique: Tsubame Gaeshi II (Temporary Name)!
[ The Laundry Pole swings right at the flames, but it does more than that, it expands its reach. The sword grows branches like a great tree in fast forward, wooden spikes bursting out and turning the sword into something more like a web of wood, all protected by mana.
A Holy Knight could cut through mana streams and take it for himself. Kojirou knew that. He just never had the chance to try it before, and was operating on pure instinct. The fireball is chipped away, branches slicing lines through the inferno, but it's not complete. Tongues of fire lash at him despite the protective field of his sword and flag, cutting at his exposed arms and face, burning away at his uniform.
It's not clean, but he'll survive. ]
Now then, I think I could do with some healing, but I believe I have what we need to win now.

[ Maki isn't sure what she's seeing here. She's never seen a sword style like that. ...And that's not even a sword at all is it?! The sheer impossibility of what she's seeing has her nearly on her butt in disbelief, watching without even being able to blink.
That wooden pole, no tree branch, should probably be lit up by the fireball. That's what logic tells Maki. But she can feel the mana produced and consumed, wondering when she started to be able to do that. It feels her with a strange feeling, but she manages to keep her legs still beneath her, even as her hand covers her open mouth. ]
What did you...-- right! I'm here! Leave it to me, just do what you can!
[ Gathering her mana Maki braves enough to move a little closer, out from behind her safe place. ]
Heal! [ She yells out into the air, lifting her hand with a blueish green light, which explodes into shimmering particles that scatter then swarm around Kojirou as it heals him.
The dragon isn't standing still though. It's attracted to the girl using her all too enticing healing magic.. ]
no subject
He can blame the dragon though, for taking its attention off of him and turning to the King who hasn't done anything to offend it. (Apart from healing and buffing the Knight which is actually fighting it. Technicalities.) ]
Your opponent is me, dragon.
[ Trying to push its way past Kojirou to attack Maki would cost it dearly. Tapping into the mana he absorbed from the dragon's fire breath, the samurai channels all of it into the blade of his sword, which had retracted into its usual shape by now.
The wooden sword glows white hot, the only thing keeping it from exploding into flames being the precise control of mana that the swordsman was managing. Even the air around the sword seems to warp from the heat. There were stories dedicated to the power of dragon fire, and now Kojirou had made it his own. For a while, anyway. ]
So face me!
[ The chain wrapped around his left hand shoots out like a grappling hook, launching itself right at the dragon's neck and wrapping around the giant creature. It isn't nearly enough to strangle a dragon, no, but it is enough to let him reel himself in, sending Kojirou right up at the dragon like he's some Medieval Japanese Spider-man, burning sword brandishing in his right hand. ]
no subject
You know, even as screamed out when the dragon started to turn it attention on her. That's pretty frightening!
Luckily the ire of the dragon is pull back to Kojirou as he faces it down with its own power, a flash of recognition appearing in the creature's eyes. Maki can see it too, that it must be smarter than the other monsters she's fought. That makes it dangerous... but she trusts that her samurai knows exactly what he's doing.
The dragon shoots its head forward to snap those dangerous jaws around Kojirou's soft body, only to miss as he shoots past it. Maki covers her mouth with her hand, hiding the worried sound that escapes. ]
no subject
But perhaps facing a dragon with no fear at all is the far stranger thing here. Perhaps it's the one who's swinging from a dragon's neck by a mere chain, using the momentum to catapult himself up into the air and onto the dragon's back that's odd. No, he's definitely the odd one here.
Then again, normal people don't become heroes. ]
Hm. I've never ridden a dragon before.
[ Okay, so he's not actually riding it as much as he is hanging on for dear life, the chain wrapped around its neck his only lifeline. It might very well throw him off at any time, and is in fact trying to right now, massive wings beating, rising slightly into the air in an attempt to fling off the intruder.
The hailstorm is once again protecting him here, keeping the dragon from simply launching itself into the air and waiting for him to get tired and fall to his death. ]
Now then...
[ Once he finds a steady position, Kojirou finally does what he came up here for, and drives his superheated sword right into the dragon's back with a great thrust!
Have you ever heard a dragon's cry, Maki? It's not an idol's song that's for sure. ]
no subject
And Maki wants to be believe she's plenty normal!! ]
Be careful!!
[ Watching Kojirou on the things back, barely holding on with the chain, Maki can't help but exclaim in fear for his life. She's the one who's going to have to put him together after all!
And the beast screams it's death knell, prompting Maki to cover her mouth in horror. It's... terrible, honestly, watching something die, but it had to be done, even Maki knows that. It destroyed so much... she just feels sick watching as it thrashes, bleeding, before it slowly starts to grow slow... and then slump to the ground. ]
no subject
lightsaberburning sword that's in its back. It rises and falls, managing half a take off before slamming back into the ground, eventually managing to die. ]Ow.
[ Kojirou climbs off the dead dragon somewhat unsteadily. That was an experience he would not care to repeat. No wonder even amongst Riders, only the finest of them could manage a dragon mount. ]
Now that's a head worthy of taking home. But before that, I think I'd appreciate another round of healing.
[ Because after getting tossed around like that, Kojirou's basically just a giant bruise. ]
no subject
Getting closer, she still can't believe what she sees. The dragon has stopped moving, but it's still there, unlike some of the other monsters she's fought this one doesn't just go away. It makes her sick. ]
Is it... is it really dead?
[ Looking back up to Kojirou, she tries to keep herself together. ]
R-Right, here... [ And she reaches in that pouch she keeps with her, pulling out a bottle of an almost unnatural sort of bright red. ]
no subject
I doubt it's just sleeping. It's a rather odd place to be taking a nap. But if you prefer, we can take its head home. Perhaps you would like to mount it on your wall?
[ It would be quite the hunting trophy, wouldn't it? A big honking dragon head? ]
no subject
W-What?! No! Why would anyone want that?!
[ The idea almost makes her want to be sick all over again, looking at him and then the definitely not sleeping dragon. She has no interest in trophies like that! ]
no subject
[ Amongst other things. Presenting one's lord with an enemy's head was considered a great gift too, in certain cultures. Not that Kojirou ever did any of that. He has little interest in trophies for the sake of trophies. ]
Perhaps more useful is not the head but what's in its mouth. A dragon's tooth can be intensely magical. In fact, all parts of dragons are rather useful. Do you think we could get a cart to take it back home with?
[ Dragon steak for everyone! ... Maybe. ]
no subject
[ She would never get any sleep ever. But the idea of a tooth...
Maki reaches into her pouch again, another health potion emerging. ]
If I had a dragon tooth I could make more potions... and I wouldn't need to be so frugal with what I have.. [ She's trying to make a deal here! She's just terrible at it. But chances are there might still be some lingering pain there, right Kojirou? ]
no subject
[ Kojirou reaches inside his jacket and pulls out a knife, and with a heave turns the dead dragon's head to the side that it can hang open. The knife goes straight in, as he stands right amongst the creature's teeth in a way that would be extremely dangerous if it weren't dead.
A little bit of gory extraction later... ]
Here you go.
[ A tooth the size of Maki's forearm flies through the air, right at the girl. It definitely wasn't something anyone wanted to be bitten by. Hopefully she doesn't mind the blood clinging to it. ]
no subject
Maki is definitely turning away because she has no interest in seeing any of this at all!! Even the noises are gross why did she agree to this?! She hopes that she didn't make a mistake and dragon's teeth aren't actually useful at all!
And of course, when he says that she turns, to catch the thing in her hands. You know, with blood on it. That she instantly drops. ]
W-W-What was that for?!
no subject
[ Kojirou wasn't watching Maki be grossed out while he was carving the teeth out, so he wasn't exactly aware that she found any of this especially unpleasant. It's just carving up a big monster, there's nothing weird or gross about it! ]
Ah, but I believe dragon's blood has different alchemical properties from dragon's teeth so you'll have to wash it clean first.
[ This here samurai's been a wanderer for a long time. Making messes out of wild animals is merely a day in the life. ]
no subject
[ Clean things before you start throwing them around Kojirou!! Ugh, looking down at her hands Maki almost feels like throwing up holding them out away from her and trying to shake them clean.
...for a girl who has now had to stitch people up, and use her healing spells on people with various wounds, when it's not life threatening she really is squeamish. ]
no subject
[ Does he really have to explain this? Animals usually don't come perfectly clean! Even the whole chickens found at the supermarket still have some blood or bloodlike stuff left on them! ]
I'd look for the closest spring or well as quickly as possible, if I were you.
no subject
[ And with that, she briskly turns her back to Kojirou, and stuffs the new tooth into her pack. Before deciding to just walk about!! ]
no subject
[ Bye Maki! ]
no subject
I-I'll be fine!!
