WELCOME TO Caissa

We’ve all had those dreams: you wake up on a table, to blurry, ominous images and the certainty that you are absolutely buck-naked in a room full of strangers. This is not quite it.

Instead, you come awake to the sun on your face. The soft burble of water nearby. The hustle and bustle of a busy street and the faint, fortifying smell of bread. You open your eyes and there’s no one there at your bedside, but there is what appears to be the end of the world happening just beyond your window.

There’s a crack in the world across the sky, the “sun” is the totally unnatural light spilling from that crack straight into your eyes, and someone’s left a neatly pressed and folded uniform at the foot of the bed that isn’t yours. Somewhere in the room, there’s a strange clatter like beads, the click of claws on the floor.

Something’s in here with you.

Also, you are naked.

WARNING: Contains death and related graphic descriptions.

ONE P.S. I Love You
It's a perfectly ordinary morning in Caissa. Enprise’s two suns peer over the horizon and smack into your face through the large bay window. At half past six in the morning, the floor nanny’s built-in alarm goes off and plays Prime Minister Teddy’s hit song Love Me Like Your Doughnuts. Once everyone in their rooms is up and awake, this mechanical pigeon announces that letters and small packages have been delivered to every Hero’s personal box in the mailroom. Yes, even you, Naked Newcomer! These letters are from the Heroes’ many fans all over Blanc. No matter who you are, there are small tokens of appreciation attached to the letters: these may include candies shaped like stars, chocolates with a surprise gooey center, or even a can of rainbow beans for those not fond of sweets.

Letters for veteran Heroes are full of praise and gratitude for the success of the naval battle at Graupera. New Heroes receive mail that express support towards their future endeavors as the Blanc military’s most formidable task force. That’s not all the letters contain, however; the citizens also plead for our Heroes’ help with new problems that have arisen in the fields surrounding Caissa. However, the details the letters provide are scant and vague. The fans seem more concerned with recent damage caused by some unknown entity. There is a 15-page narrative of how a man built this beautiful house for his lovely, sweet wife who did nothing wrong, but nothing about why the house is in shambles now. A market on the outskirts of Caissa lost 30,000 colle’s worth of food, but the writer neglects to explain what happened to the food. All you know is that this person stayed up all week taking inventory and now it has gone to waste.

Sharing letters with each other might give you a clue on where to start your investigations and figure out which areas were hit the hardest. Or you can talk about how cute your adoring fans are. One way or another, you’ll have to get tongues wagging to make any progress. Unfortunately, Blanc isn’t going to save itself and from the sound of it, this problem is bigger than expected...

TWO Distant Howling
After pooling information, the new objective is clear: to investigate the damages. The vast, vibrant fields around Caissa seem a good place to start. They are mostly empty, but here or there you will see some people from nearby smaller villages and farms. The villagers will admit to having seen threatening shadows move over the fields and having heard harsh, high-pitched howling. They are willing to point Heroes toward possible shadow sightings, but are otherwise reluctant to act as guides. They are simple townsfolk who wish to return to their quiet lifestyle.

You may come up with small settlements (e.g. villages, farms, inns, taverns, etc.) as they are considered minor locations.

Heroes will soon discover that some of the smaller villages have been burned down entirely. The smell of ash and charred wood is thick in the air, though some buildings are also smashed as as though by something large and heavy. Nearby trees which haven’t been uprooted or knocked over are scorched and their blackened branches crackle ominously in the breeze. There are large marks dug deep into the ground and—is that a cow? Heroes will find tagged fruit cows scattered everywhere, scared, confused and mooing sadly next to their dead fruit cow friends. Fruit cows are usually found in Gresser, how strange...

A couple of days’ worth of exploration may help you realize that whatever is terrorizing Blanc doesn’t only devour hapless animals. While trying to navigate the numerous backcountry roads and farmlands, Heroes may stumble upon some gruesome clues: a charred limb—or what’s left of it; teeth, half-eaten ribcages, melted jewelry, and other smaller bits; the less fortunate may actually trip over a corpse staring unseeingly into the sky. It has been gutted, half-roasted, and seems to have lain in the sun for some time; and if someone is brave enough to roll the body onto its stomach, they may discover claw marks on its back. The victim must have tried to flee from something.

The amount of damage grows the more our Heroes travel south. What could be awaiting them?

THREE Breath of Fire
Let’s put the clues together. Fire? Check. Claw marks? Check. Large shadows seemingly from something flying overhead? Check and check. Congratulations, Blanc, you are suffering from a dragon plague.

It will take several days for the Heroes to locate the source of the rumors. The dragons seem to have taken up residence in the hilly area near Caissa, where the slopes grow steeper and then drop suddenly off into cliffs. The beasts are quite willing to greet guests warmly: there’s nothing like a burst of dragonfire and a deafening screech to brighten your day.

The only warning you’ll get before they launch themselves into the air and at Heroes is the sound of trees bursting beneath their claws. Beware: a single swipe can cause some serious damage and their fire breath, fast, frequent and garnished with the occasional, boiling hot drop of saliva, is nothing you want to stick around for. The dragons cannot be reasoned with, nor can they be tamed. A queen’s Charm magic WILL NOT work. Should someone try and reach out with their senses to see if the dragons are somehow hurting, they will only feel something alien and terrible.

Heroes aren't the only ones suffering under the dragons’ claws, unfortunately. Scattered around the area are a few small and isolated farms, and the animals and the farmers are easy prey and unlikely to flee in time. Heroes will want to intervene before the dragons can devour and destroy. If they are too late, they will need to provide support. Put out fires, heal the injured, catch panicked cows before they become pot roast! The dragons might be coming around for another attack, so it would be a good time to test barriers and other damage control skills.

To make matters worse, Blanc’s weather has decided that now is the perfect time for a hailstorm. It’s barely anything at first, beginning with small kernels the size of corn here and there to wet the grass and ruin your footing. Then it becomes much larger and greater in number. Dragons are not exempt from this hailhole: large enough pieces may rip holes in their wings! Heroes may want to use this to their advantage; additionally, casting ice and wind spells will suddenly become a lot easier, and the dragons will struggle to navigate in the stormy weather, forcing them to land more often. Better get up on that dragon’s back!

In the end, survivors of the dragon horde let out one last, collective shriek before they turn southward. The battle has been won, but the war is just beginning: the dragons have only been chased away. Their nest seems to be elsewhere and that is a worrying prospect. Dragons aren’t native to Blanc, which can only mean one thing…

Meanwhile, a new job opening has appeared at Gresser. At least you finally know what to do with all those fruit cows.

Indeed...even the greatest of us- [her, she means] -would struggle to identify the culprit with only this to go by.

[Even so, she holds the letter out in front of her and flicks it once or twice with her other hand.]

It isn't even particularly well written. A shame, considering the nature of the problem; heartfelt and sincere, it would certainly make for something good.
hoasen: (A BARGAIN WHERE?)

[personal profile] hoasen 2016-05-09 03:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, with so little information. [She totally thought the "greatest of us" meant in general!] And they all sound different. Many culprits?

[She takes a glance at the letter that is currently in focus.]

I suppose this is more a heartfelt request, rather than anything we can use. Does this one have an address on it? Perhaps we can go there.

[personal profile] ateaist 2016-05-09 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
An address...

[Good point, actually. Nobunaga pulls the letter back and holds it out in front of herself, re-reading, nodding.]

Ah, there it is.

[Then hands it over instead.]

I have no idea where this is.
hoasen: (wonder)

[personal profile] hoasen 2016-05-11 03:08 pm (UTC)(link)
[And then she looks it over! Well, she was looking it over until the letter itself was handed to her.]

Oh! I was wondering, you just arrived, no?
ateaist: pixiv id=74573578 (3)

[personal profile] ateaist 2016-05-12 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
That's right! I see they throw us newcomers straight into the fray, at least.

[She considers that though, and-]

So then...are you native to this world?
hoasen: (hmm?)

[personal profile] hoasen 2016-05-12 02:09 pm (UTC)(link)
[She nods, because the time she was here, they tossed them right into a festival. Which ended bloody, yikes.] Fortunately we do get some time off.

Ah, I am not a native. I was brought here a couple of months ago myself.

And being summoned to another time and place like this...would you say that's something you're used to?

[She'll ask more about the actual world around them in a minute. Apparently she's decided this is more important to ask first.]
hoasen: (A BARGAIN WHERE?)

[personal profile] hoasen 2016-05-13 04:22 pm (UTC)(link)
[That...is an interesting thing to ask.]

Not really. I have lived through time and history, but not summoned into another time and place. This world is not my own, I am from a planet called Earth. [Just in case!]

What of yourself? [She's curious, considering this was brought up.]
ateaist: pixiv id=74573578 (11)

[personal profile] ateaist 2016-05-14 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
Very much so! You could say as far as existences go I'm on the transient end of things. I'm curious about whether or not it's common around here...well, no matter. Pay it no mind.

[She dismisses the topic...quite literally, with a wave of her hand.]

Allow me to introduce myself instead; you stand in the presence of the demon king of the sixth heaven, Nobunaga Oda! A pleasure to make your acquaintance.
hoasen: (seek)

[personal profile] hoasen 2016-05-17 04:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Transient? [She's making it sound like she's...a spirit? Dead? A video game summon? (Wait a minute).

It starts to make a bit more sense once she introduces herself. However, that just brings up a lot more questions. Nobunaga Oda was a man in her world. However, seeing as Estonia dreamed of switched nations once, this shouldn't even be weird. Even though Vietnam doesn't know anything about that.

But she does know that her own existence is weird to others. What universe did a female Nobunaga come from?]

I have heard of you. A different version, I believe. Male, in my world. But nonetheless, one of my brother's lords! [She bows her head politely.] It is nice to meet you, Nobunaga Oda! My name is Vietnam, I am, in a way, Japan's younger sister.

Yes, yes, I've heard all about him and his ugly facial hair--

[Wait.]

[personal profile] ateaist 2016-05-17 04:28 pm (UTC)(link)
[Vietnam?? Her brother's...lords...younger sister...what??]

You're...a country...?
hoasen: (hmm?)

[personal profile] hoasen 2016-05-17 04:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah yes, he does have facial hair, from the paintings I have seen--...

[She looks STRANGE.]

Yes I am.

Ha...

Haha! I see! My goodness, first swords and now entire countries...this place certainly is full of surprises! But no matter. If you're willing to accept me then I see no reason not to offer the same in return.

[She even bows to Vietnam, which she literally never does to other people, but this is a special case!!]

My, if people are born from their homeland I suppose this makes you like a relative. Let's see now...if you're his sister...an aunt maybe? Very well! If ever you need anything you may rely on me! There's no need to be shy; I'll do right by you for the sake of my homeland I loved so dearly.

[She really is going a mile a minute here...]

hoasen: (ever clear)

[personal profile] hoasen 2016-05-17 05:01 pm (UTC)(link)
[Nobunaga sure took it in stride! Which does make her wonder about her own origins. Not many accept it that fast.]

Ah yes, you met the swords already! We are similar. Spirits representing something, like a sword or a country. And of course. We are all from different...how to say, walks of life? If you accept me as I am, then I accept you.

[O-oh, she got a bow! She has to bow politely back, it is only fair. Because while being a country does mean she gets some respect, world leaders are still boss level! Not her boss, but still.]

An aunt? [She tilts her head and thinks about it. It makes sense!] I suppose that is fair! But oh! I thank you so much for your offer. [For someone known as Demon King, Nobunaga has only been gracious to her. Vietnam will accept her just as she is! She still doesn't want to impose, though--] Likewise, as Japan is my brother, and as you say, we are similar to family, I will do my best to care for his beloved lord.

Ah...beloved? Am I really? No, no, of course! After all I'm not sure what you must think of me - my reputation isn't entirely flattering, I admit - but everything I did I did for your brother! Truly! My intentions were good.

[This is what it's like having a younger relative who thinks the world of your approval, Vietnam. She never gave a damn about her own, actual blood relatives but she loved her homeland more than anything. If Vietnam is important to Japan then she's important to Nobunaga. It's that simple.]

It really has been quite a day. The sword of my valued retainer and the sister to my homeland! I already count myself quite fortunate for my arrival here...
hoasen: (hope)

[personal profile] hoasen 2016-05-18 04:20 pm (UTC)(link)
You aimed to unify all of Japan's lands, no? I think that counts. [She's watched enough Asian dramas to get refreshers on the history all the time. Granted, not all of it is correct, which is why she takes the details with a grain of salt.] Battle is never pretty, no matter how history paints it. So I am sure Japan understands. [Or at least Vietnam does! She's been through that too!

Which is why she believes Nobunaga right now. She wholeheartedly offered to help Vietnam as soon as she found out she was Japan's younger sister without even being prompted. This is someone she's sure she can trust, the more she understands her.]

Oh? Which sword did you meet? [She really needs to learn the history of the swords too.] I am thankful to have met you too. We are comrades here, but as you said, in a way, we are also family.

[She still isn't sure what she was expecting; that Vietnam speaks of them as family so sincerely and agrees so easily, she can't help but be endeared. Nobunaga might have put the idea forward, but it's how people react to her nonsense behaviour that she can judge them. So far, Vietnam's winning her over pretty quickly.]

Kanesada was his name...his master was a man by the name of Tadaoki who happened to be in my service during my lifetime. He even assisted in defeating the man responsible for my death.

Why, it couldn't be any more perfect unless it was a sword of my very own, wouldn't you say?
hoasen: (ever clear)

[personal profile] hoasen 2016-05-22 09:14 am (UTC)(link)
[It was a cute idea, and she can tell how much Nobunaga loves her homeland. Who is her to deny such loyalties? Even people who are eccentric can have good intentions. Just look at her whole family!]

Kasen! I have met him before, yes. He is a good man. Sword. [Both. He treated her well and she was happy to make him things.] Aha, it is still good that you were able to meet someone who is close to you. In a way.

What...who, is your sword then? [If he ever comes, she might be able to look out for him yeah I wish]

Ah, Heshikiri...my beloved Heshikiri. You'll find no finer sword; he remained with me even after my death.

To think he's out there now... [The more she talks, the more fondly she speaks of him as if he were an actual person she's known all along. She really loves weapons ok.] Ah, I bet he's just perfect. Tall, with a strong build and a nice face...and even with a strong voice, he must speak very politely, I'm sure. The very image of loyalty! I can see him now!
ateaist: pixiv id=74573578 (14)

[personal profile] ateaist 2016-05-23 12:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Tch...to tease me with his existence, yet deny me his presence...this surely must be an attempt at divine retribution! I've renounced the gods and so they renounce me, Vietnam!

Do you think you can keep us apart, you godly stooges!? Whoever you are, I'll show you the meaning of punishment...!! I will!!

[Talk about a drama queen king.]

hoasen: (did I leave the cat in the oven...)

[personal profile] hoasen 2016-05-23 01:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Heshikiri...I will remember that! [Tiny fist pump! Nobunaga looks so happy speaking of Heshikiri. He must be so dreamy. Considering how she met a good number of the swords, she can imagine him being handsome and strong.] I've met some swords who are like that. Ichigo Hitofuri! Heshikiri could definitely be like that too.

[She crosses her arms and raises an eyebrow. While Nobunaga passionately shakes her fists at the gods, it makes her wonder how anyone is brought here again. Taiwan was here briefly until she was sent back, so--] I wonder how this world chooses to bring people here. Like since you are here, would one could consider bringing him now? If he is your dearest sword, perhaps you both would be a formidable pair!
ateaist: pixiv id=74573578 (Default)

[personal profile] ateaist 2016-05-26 01:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Hitofuri you say...? Don't tell me that's that old monkey's sword...he hasn't mentioned anything like that, has he? About Hideyoshi Totoyomi?

[It's not really a surprise most swords would be connected to her through their masters, though; around that time she really was a central figure, whether she was revered or reviled by them.]

Ah, but what I wouldn't give to see him, even once...perhaps you're right.

Only I hope the forces that be don't expect me to grovel. I've no time for that.
