In the seconds it takes the dragon to bypass him and reach, jaws snapping, for the girl, Sasuke swings his blade up and cuts across the under side of the beast's throat.
He can assume that, generally, the anatomy of this thing is likely not much different from a lizard. Those scales are a good defense, and Sasuke knows he doesn't slice an artery because the blood that spills isn't as fast and dark as it should be. It does, however, slow the dragon down.
