intro ♚ april

WELCOME TO GRAUPERA

We’ve all had those dreams: you wake up on a table, to blurry, ominous images and the certainty that you are absolutely buck-naked in a room full of strangers. This is not quite it.

Instead, you come awake to the sun on your face. The soft burble of water nearby. The hustle and bustle of a busy street and the faint, fortifying smell of bread. You open your eyes and there’s no one there at your bedside, but there is what appears to be the end of the world happening just beyond your window.

There’s a crack in the world across the sky, the “sun” is the totally unnatural light spilling from that crack straight into your eyes, and someone’s left a neatly pressed and folded uniform at the foot of the bed that isn’t yours. Somewhere in the room, there’s a strange clatter like beads, the click of claws on the floor.

Something’s in here with you.

Also, you are naked.

ONE CAPABLANCA & AIRY
As much as Blanc’s capital welcomes its Heroes, new arrivals such as yourself won’t have much time to settle. Get dressed and pick up your weapon and Carrier, because sometime in the afternoon, all floor nannies and Carriers will broadcast an announcement by Commander Lisbrand. She delivers a brief greeting to their new members, but gets straight to the point: they will be headed for Capablanca and the open sea beyond, in order to restore the fortress of Graupera for battle with Noir looming on the horizon. All new Heroes are expected to report to the Airy at the Caissa aeroport on the 8th along with their seniors.

On the morning of the 11th, Airy alights on Graupera, an island about two hours away from Capablanca by ferry. From here, you can either help the navy with Graupera repairs or assist in Verdoni’s investigations and head for Capablanca proper. Heroes will be staying in the (in)famous Hotel Caruana: they say you can check in anytime you like, but you can never truly leave. Nobody will quite meet your eyes or tell you what it means.

Wherever you are, the Airy will remain parked at Graupera.

TWO GRAUPERA, CAPABLANCA SEA FORT
What was once a heavily fortified island rests a ways off the coast of Capablanca; it looks a little too much like one of the thunderclouds slowly swarming on the horizon. Graupera has seen many battles and withstood the ebb and flow of wars. Formerly the city’s first line of defense until it was abandoned after the Reclamation, its dilapidated condition is the current bane of the Blanc navy. Blanc needs to bring it back to its former glory before it can face a single warship, much less Noir’s fleet of magical cannons. Blanc’s government has no doubt Heroes will do a fine job at returning the fortress to its former glory!

A ♙ The great stone and iron wall facing the wide open ocean has seen better days and is full of holes overgrown with stubborn clinging vines; cannonballs used a lifetime ago litter the grounds. The vines are extremely thick and may tangle the careless beyond hope of escape, not to mention filled with a pungent sap that will seep into your clothes and hair for days. It makes a great adhesive, though? Conveniently, parts of the wall are strewn across the floor, so at least some of the cannon holes can be repaired with enough improvisation, desperation and a bit of spit. The rest need new material provided by our helpful Heroes in Option C. Furthermore, the lingering damage from a previous attack and old age have turned the floorboards weak and unstable. The wood creaks ominously beneath the mass of even a single average-sized person, so watch your step.

B ♟ You might want to get your weapon before you descend into the dank depths beneath the castle. Once you make it down the steep, slippery stairs, you’ll be meeting the gigantic, hostile rats that infest the castle cellar from top to bottom. It looks like magical residue from long-ago battles has seeped into both the foundation and its inhabitants. The cellars have become a huge warren filled with strange mana currents, and sometimes flooded with water. If you're going to start an extermination campaign, you may want to recall the magical residue: chopping off a rat’s head and limbs will barely slow it down. It will keep going for hours unless you either lop off all its limbs or pierce its heart.

If you manage to make it all the way up into the castle’s two intact towers (the other two are half-collapsed), the uppermost levels are utterly covered in bird crap. You’ll be encountering the kings of this castle: the unusually large, grey-feathered sea birds that have taken up residence here. Albatrosses, gulls, pelicans, even sand pipers: they all share nesting and pooping space here. The feathers of each bird seem to have taken on stone-like properties not unlike the castle’s walls. They’re extremely ferocious and protective of their nests, which are filled with all kinds of things: twigs, shiny things, coin money, Option C’s supplies, feathers of all kinds, and some completely ordinary tools that seem too small for human hands, and much older than anything else in the place save for the walls. If you look closely, you might be able to see a few baby rats scattered in amongst the eggs and the peeping chicks. They’re being fed, too.

You’re meant to be moving the birds out of the place, but you might have enough trouble just moving their offal.

C ♙ Don’t feel like dealing with pest control? No problem! Blanc will need materials for rebuilding and other supplies for the coming battle! Everyone knows how important it is for the fortress to remain standing, so Heroes will be provided with gadgets and weaponry that should make it difficult for enemies to penetrate the walls yet again. Word has spread that the Heroes are transporting valuable goods, though, so you might have to fend off the occasional hopeful man or annoying mouse (rat) who wishes to borrow much-needed material.

Of course, all this rebuilding will be for naught if you are not prepared to defend the stronghold! Ammunition such as cannonballs, bullets and arrows needs to be transported to Graupera en masse, pronto. Equally important essentials include first aid supplies and enough non-perishable food and water to last a small army (you) a month or two. You wouldn’t want to have to scavenge for rat meat.

No one knows just how long this battle is going to last.

THREE Training
It’s time for you landlubbers to learn how to swim! Commander Lisbrand won’t be tolerating any sinking stones on her task force. The upcoming battle will be fought on the sea so your instructor, one of Blanc’s many fine captains (when she isn’t intoxicated), will make every single individual who hesitates at the sight of the open ocean walk the plank. She’ll even give you a helpful kick if necessary! Once that’s over, she will show you how to steer a ship. However, wandering eyes that land anywhere on the inebriated captain’s assets will be swiftly and spectacularly dealt a large bottle of the harbor’s best swill right where it hurts.

Blanc has also provided training dummies dressed suspiciously like prominent figures of the Othellian underworld. Now might be a good time to branch out and learn about your affinities. Heroes who have recently been promoted in Rank might want to set some time aside for getting used to their new abilities, too. Power and responsibility come hand in hand, after all!

[Shinoa. You have his attention.

Gilbert. You're being ignored. And cuddled. Congrats.]

What did you have in mind, Shi-chan?

[Really there's nothing more to add here. Alcohol is on the brain and Shinoa seems to be offering a way to get him some. Maybe. Hopefully.

Please before sober comes.]
scythersergeant: (amuse)

[personal profile] scythersergeant 2016-04-09 02:06 pm (UTC)(link)
[Woah, look at that serious face. So maybe he has to be constantly bribed by alcohol, but at least it's something the army can work with. She deserves an award.]

Make me an offer? It's time to see how much attention you paid to our interests through this conversation!

Or you can convince me you really need that alcohol. Like, how much do you need it right now? You'd-burn-down-a-building need it? I'd rather not waste. Getting you the stuff is not gonna be free, y'know.

[She really means money, which is depleting fast, but she's young enough that anything more than a thousand colle sounds endless. How much could booze cost, right?]
interchained: (You can see)

[personal profile] interchained 2016-04-09 02:16 pm (UTC)(link)
[Clearing his throat a few times doesn't help at all, it seems. He's still here, guys. Trying to get your attention, but how is he supposed to win with booze? There's simply no way he would be able to do that.]

Just remember that she's underage...!

[Please? He's not as lively in Jirou's arms as he was a few moments ago, at least. Is being calm the key?]

And I think you should get your weap—

[Is giving a weapon to Jiroutachi right now a really good idea? Probably not, that's why he stops in the middle of the sentence.]
sakeplz: (Warming Up With Drinks)

[personal profile] sakeplz 2016-04-09 02:24 pm (UTC)(link)
[He's not really got a good concept of what underage means, Gil. He's a sword.]

Underage? Because she's Tantou sized?

[Yeah that's...pretty much his only frame of reference here sadly.

Anyway, he thinks about that and looks over. Riiiiight. His sword isn't here. That's a little odd to not have the sword of himself for him who is a sword to hold onto. (Don't ask.) Humming, he considers that before looking at the girl again, chin on Gil's shoulder.]

Hmmm? Making an offer of someone who you saw literally has nothing doesn't seem very wise. Unless you're thinking of having a servant. In that case, this sword happens to have a master already. [He gives her a calm and steady smile. Would you believe he actually is quite drunk off his ass currently?]

I don't like to be sober, Shi-chan.

[Then the silliness is back and he giggles.] Gi-chan! You said weapons!

[personal profile] scythersergeant 2016-04-09 02:34 pm (UTC)(link)
[So he can be bribed into use. Well, semi-use. Time will tell if he's only sounding coherent. She can work with this!

If he can be somewhat useful while being drunk off his ass, Shinoa doesn't care if he's drunk off his ass.]

Okay, let's get you some alcohol! Tell me more about your master on the way. How does he wield you, exactly?

[She reaches into her pockets to count the colle she has on hand.]

Don't worry, Gil-chan. I'm not planning to drink. [Much. She's not opposed to a few sips, if she can get away with it.] We can just give him the money and he can get it himself from the stores!

Oh, we might have to arm him first before the army lets him go, though.
interchained: (Lovingly rearrange the thoughts)

[personal profile] interchained 2016-04-09 02:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Shi...Shinoa?!

[As much as Gilbert didn't want to be included in the Jirou + Shinoa + alcohol equation, he couldn't just let them go alone, could he? Someone has to be an adult here. Yes, that's right.

He has to admit that he's a bit curious about Jirou's master, too.]

We'll better go with him...I mean, just look at him. He'll get into trouble in no time, I'm sure of it.

[Talking like Jirou's hasn't been draping over him for a while now and couldn't hear him, that's rude, Gil.]
sakeplz: (Wow That's Exciting!)

[personal profile] sakeplz 2016-04-09 02:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Alcohol! Drinks!

[He lets go of Gil to go gather up Tarou-chan who is making squeaks of excitement. Oooooh boy. There are two lushes living in this room. And both of them think alcohol for breakfast is a GREAT IDEA.

This is your life now, you two. This is your life.]

Swords like me have been brought in and given bodies like this so we can fight demons. So I go and slash them. Not that I like to because all that activity sobers me up pretty fast.

[Apparently he can fight.]

Where are the weapons?

Lola blinked the sleep from her eyes and sat up. Lola was a little on the slow side before coffee, but even she noticed the first and most glaringly obvious problem. This room was not pink. This wasn't Frankie's guest room or Shay's room either. And she knew better than to spend the night at Tiny's, between his being a boy, her boyfriend, and living without any sort of adult supervision her father would send her to a convent for that.

She looked around the room a few moments trying to figure out where she was... and then she figured out the second most glaringly obvious problem. With the most undignified little squeak she pulled the blankets back over her because she realized she was very, very naked. She wished she drank, if she drank this whole situation would make a lot more sense.

Airy Travels
Lola spent most of the trip going from shop to shop trying to find all the essentials to her new life here. She needed a purse that matched her little little kangaroo rat friend. Whom she calls Julio after her poor missing phone. Julio was busy chewing on the edges of the little pink clutch she found to keep him in.

Fabric and accessories to make her uniform match her hair, naturally, was next. And socks to match the cute white boots that are apparently her weapon. They were pretty but she wished the heel was a bit higher on them. She'd now need to be extra careful making sure her clothes go with her shoes, instead of picking shoes with each outfit.

Naturally, of course, Lola's gotten lost more than she's found while wandering the ship. So she frequently is asking for directions to get everywhere.

Training
Lola was already an excellent swimmer, summers by the pool were a standard for her. So Lola's time training was more about these new boots of hers. If you notice Lola's sporting quite a bit of bruises? That's because she's gotten pretty good at the jumping thing.

She's still figuring out how to land. You would think landing would be easy, it isn't. She can't control how high she goes, when she jumps it ends up at an angle and she end up crashing into a roll. It's a really fun ride and she's laughing on the way up... maybe someone should give her some advice about not crashing.

Before her hair needs to be dyed purple to match the bruises.

Capablanca Beach
Lola is totally investigating. That's what she's doing, entirely. There are no ulterior motives and she definitely isn't limiting this investigating to cute boys without shirts. ...it isn't cheating if you've been kidnapped and conscripted as a soldier, right? Lola's boots (which she still can't use right) are tied together and slung over her shoulder. And while she's wearing her uniform, she has on a new bikini underneath it.

What harm will a few hours of hooky and pizza do? Care to join her?

Kojirou/Assassin | Fate/

[ Assassin steps over a pile of bird poop lightly. He doesn't have that many pairs of sandals to spare, he doesn't want to have to buy more if he can at all help it. ]

Somebody told me there were swift birds on top of these towers. I see why I'm needed.

[ He looks at the pair of swords hanging from his waist. An ordinary-sized longsword he took off the corpse of one of the lizardmen from the dungeon, and a longer wooden sword that's his magic weapon. In this case... ]

These are just uglier swallows. No, perhaps not even as dangerous. Shall we?

[ The steel sword is drawn from its sheath. The Laundry Pole is probably more useful here, but that's exactly why he's starting with the weaker weapon. He can't get too reliant on its magic powers. ]

3

[ Training. Kojirou always has time for training. The world here doesn't work like the one he's used to, and not being able to use the Tsubame Gaeshi bothers him more than he cares to admit. So given the opportunity to have a bunch of targets to whack at, he's going to take it.

But honestly... He has nothing against drills. He's very good at repetition. It's a good path to mastery. But it's very distracting when he's much better than almost everyone else here.

Right! Time to go annoy people. ]

Your swordplay...

[ He sneaks up to somebody practising, stroking his chin, clearly unimpressed. Almost exaggeratedly so. ]

[Dust can sympathize -- with all of it, considering he'd known nothing of magic when he first came here, and now had apparently been promoted to a rank that proclaimed it to be his focus.]

[Pretty crazy, really. But he keeps offering to help, so...]

Sometimes your weapon can give you a clue. To start with, do you know how to challenge mana into your weapon?

[Of course, he never makes eye contact as he addresses her. That hat remains a barrier between them. That's how he operates.]

[Namazuo's been back here practicing with his weapon, which isn't as easy as it sounds since it's a slippery catfish bludgeon that needs practice to even hold on to. He figured now would be as good a time as any to fix that...but then he hears a familiar voice.]

Jirou-san? Ah, I'd lend you mine, but it's kind of hard to hold...

Funny thing. My sword's useless unless I charge it with my staff's power.

[Which is why despite the cramped conditions, Dust has neither in his hands. His sword is sheathed behind his waist, while his staff is strapped over his back in a manner than really cramps his cloak's style.]

[So it goes. He wasn't given a choice in either, after all.]

But we have more resources than just weapons, you know.
mithrarin: (whoa hold on)

[personal profile] mithrarin 2016-04-09 05:13 pm (UTC)(link)
"Are you all right?"

Dust winced at the crashing landing, one hand reflexively held up as if to protect himself, but as soon as he recovered he hurried over to her side, dropping to a knee to check on her.
mithrarin: (frown)

3

[personal profile] mithrarin 2016-04-09 05:15 pm (UTC)(link)
What about it?

[Even Dust knows he's clunky, at the moment, because he's experimenting -- trying to test the limits of what he can do with his sword while it's actually effective, thanks to the power of his staff. Which means a lot of switching between the two, trying to figure out the length and scope of the effect, and not a lot of effective fighting at all.]

[ He would not call it spying.

The Hero King recalls her from a dream, remembers that she'd struck him as a particular kind of woman: a lioness sleeping in the sand, uninterested in flowers and song where there had been carrion to be devoured, the salt of flesh to taste, and a different sort of music to be made with the creatures which had howled, seeking to usurp her (usurp them) from her place.

Instead, he would call it learning her.

She moves with efficiency, making a study of a whip before feeling the weight of a mace, keen upon familiarizing herself with the array of tools at her disposal rather than the scarlet shawl which had been left to warm in the noonday light. So eager is she to consume all things new (she moves, now, to grasp a shield), that Sion cannot help but wonder if she has ever seen combat, or if he so happens to be privy to something beautiful: a fledgling unfurling its wings.

But then, of course, she catches sight of him, and he is left with no room for further ruminations.]

Ah? I was waiting, Caren Ortensia, for you to show me that which you promised.

[ Is he so inclined...? Truth be told, the answer is no, he merely wishes to see if she remembers him in turn. ]

But you will have my hand in practice, so let us begin. [ And begin it does, with an elegant outstretch of his arms, palms open and guileless, bared to the sky. He beckons her to him, to the place from which he's observed her from all this while, a formation of stone over which he presides, seated upon it at what seems to be his utmost leisure. ] First, though, I would see you renewed.

[ If she would allow for it, of course. ]

Are you sure?

[ Assassin rises to his feet, having been satisfied with watching Caren from afar until now. He wanted to comment on her weapon skills, but it was nearly impossible with how often she was switching weapons. Honestly, she wasn't very impressive. Merely human, even. ]

I'm a harsh trainer.

[ His wooden sword rests on his shoulder, more than ready for any kind of fighting. He's a Servant, fighting is his job. ]
hiryugaeshi: (i'm just that good)

[personal profile] hiryugaeshi 2016-04-09 05:42 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not quite just flailing, but it could be much better.

[ Kojirou's harsh with his criticism, and why wouldn't he be? In terms of pure martial ability, he hasn't met anyone who's really a match for him. In fact, Dust might be the first person he'd call "not just flailing." He actually knows how to use a sword. ]

Using two long weapons at once seems unwise.

[ Noir probably shouldn't be so nonplussed at waking up ass naked, but there are greater things one could fuss over. There are clean clothes right here and a fluffy white pup click-clacking around the room, coming to sit by his bed as he wakes and patiently awaiting him.

Perhaps it was just a dream. Another white dog with a red scarf, keeping him company in vague flashes. The name of his companion from Reverse is on his lips before anything else, addressing this new little dog that may not even belong to him. ]

Roda.

[ But it seems to register with a tilt of the head and the perking of those soft white ears. Yes, Roda. That's her name now. Lag's memories float around the void where his heart had been and he remembers a similar dog, the one with the red scarf— his Dingo. When he was Gauche. He can't help but touch the scar on his cheek from the past, sitting on the edge of the bed for a long moment despite his nakedness before he begins to dress.

The uniform is... not what he's used to. But a uniform nonetheless means he can blend into his surroundings, so there's no qualms wearing these garments. (Even if they're all white; he's so used to black and other dark colors.) And it isn't like there's anyone else in the room.

...Right??

Once he's dressed and figures this is about as tidy as he'll get, Noir and his tag-along pup will leave the room and see if he can glean any information from anyone nearby. ]

Hello?

[ There are other rooms beside his— should he knock? Who knows what might be behind them though; the military-esque training he's received tells him it'd be best to move on, but perhaps if he just. Hangs around in the hallway. Looking inconspicuous. The thought that the uniform may actually make him stand out as a newcomer doesn't cross his mind.

What a strange, bright place. Is this the capital, then? Surely nowhere could be so bright without being directly under the sun, but he doesn't see any windows to confirm his suspicions. Best he stay on guard. ]

[ Break? Enjoyment? Wine? At the offer (though is it truly one at all? its phrasing lends only to a happy exclamation!), Sion cannot help but shake his head with a too-airy laugh, equal parts startled and delighted. Startled, because the notion of breaking for rest hadn't at all occurred to him (much less the idea of breaking for leisure!), and delighted if only because it is heartening, to know that such exuberance exists among his comrades. And though he gives pause, weighing the decision between continuing on with training or indulging upon a whim...

Ultimately, he smiles, seeing no harm in making a new acquaintance—how silly would it be, after all, to not come to know the very people one is to fight beside? ]

I will caution that I am ill-experienced with the tasting of wine— [ Voice lilting with both a tease and a measure of honesty, Sion seats himself beside the other man, legs long and elegantly crossed at the ankles. ] —but if you would still have me as your companion, then it would be my pleasure to try my hand at such a dalliance with you.

Right now you're just full of hot air.

[She said the words calmly enough, but she was squinting at him. It was as if she knew him from somewhere, but had never spoken to him. Perhaps he never needed to know she existed. That was true in most cases. But perhaps it was that offensive hair...

She knew him. Or of him.

With a gesture, she motioned to the various weapons, both set aside and those untouched.]

Pick one. Or would you rather I spar using only my body?

[What a way to phrase herself...but it was that technically an accurate question. Or statement.]

"I think so... I didn't break anything." Lola's managed to get the whole mana thing to work, and the boots, but she's not sure what she needs.

[ Assassin on the other hand, has no idea who this woman is. He had very limited interaction with people during his time in Fuyuki, mostly just beating back Servants and occasionally greeting children climbing the stairs to Ryuudou Temple. So how could he possibly know the overseer's replacement is?

But that's not going to keep him from being a shit. ]

I doubt you could satisfy me with just your body. Which weapon are you most comfortable with?

[ Hey, she started it. Don't blame him for keeping up with the double entendre. ]

[She,knows him too. The face that could be mistaken for an angels; the manner that was poised and polished. He was far to sweet to exist, like he was only a painted cover for a wall or a pit cover.

But that dream was no dream then, or one the was...more. Like a vision granted from God. How...meddlesome. Caren sighs, watching him with coolness in her eyes. Sweat proceeds to trickle down her cheek, and she stands there, quietly, clad in her spandex shorts and shirt.

How can she understand a man like him?]

This is a difficult place to display any sin but wrath or sloth. I have no wrath, and I am not lazy, Sion Astal.

[She remembers him all right, the fight, the kiss. The shield. The man was...many things, and a fool was not one of them. Though she debated with that idea, seeing how his interaction with her, his attempt to hug her of all things.

Caren ventured over, well into his grip, though she did not clasp him. For a few moments, shield on her arm, she watched him quietly. She then proceeded to bend down, and pinch his cheek between her fingers.]

Perhaps you are the sinful one? You seek to embrace me, both in and out of dreams. Does my body truly interest you so much?
burlyheart: (Default)

[personal profile] burlyheart 2016-04-09 07:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Did Caren ask for a military history lesson? No? Well it's coming anyway!

"Communication across vessels is actually a cornerstone of warfare. There is an entire level of deceptive tactics that rely on the margin of error between each station's knowledge. In turn, there is another field devoted to most accurately sending information. Flags and flares are universally used. Some of these vessels are outfitted with mana stream technology for this but that opens a new game. There's no doubt at least some system of passcodes."

Potemkin delivers his little lecture freely; he seems truly ease on the deck of a boat. Which might seem strange for a person who's almost exclusively used to AIRships, but maybe it's more in the spirit of standing a top a vehicle with some sort of military structure in place.
