intro ♚ may

We’ve all had those dreams: you wake up on a table, to blurry, ominous images and the certainty that you are absolutely buck-naked in a room full of strangers. This is not quite it.
Instead, you come awake to the sun on your face. The soft burble of water nearby. The hustle and bustle of a busy street and the faint, fortifying smell of bread. You open your eyes and there’s no one there at your bedside, but there is what appears to be the end of the world happening just beyond your window.
There’s a crack in the world across the sky, the “sun” is the totally unnatural light spilling from that crack straight into your eyes, and someone’s left a neatly pressed and folded uniform at the foot of the bed that isn’t yours. Somewhere in the room, there’s a strange clatter like beads, the click of claws on the floor.
Something’s in here with you.
Also, you are naked.

ONE ♟ P.S. I Love You
It's a perfectly ordinary morning in Caissa. Enprise’s two suns peer over the horizon and smack into your face through the large bay window. At half past six in the morning, the floor nanny’s built-in alarm goes off and plays Prime Minister Teddy’s hit song Love Me Like Your Doughnuts. Once everyone in their rooms is up and awake, this mechanical pigeon announces that letters and small packages have been delivered to every Hero’s personal box in the mailroom. Yes, even you, Naked Newcomer! These letters are from the Heroes’ many fans all over Blanc. No matter who you are, there are small tokens of appreciation attached to the letters: these may include candies shaped like stars, chocolates with a surprise gooey center, or even a can of rainbow beans for those not fond of sweets.
Letters for veteran Heroes are full of praise and gratitude for the success of the naval battle at Graupera. New Heroes receive mail that express support towards their future endeavors as the Blanc military’s most formidable task force. That’s not all the letters contain, however; the citizens also plead for our Heroes’ help with new problems that have arisen in the fields surrounding Caissa. However, the details the letters provide are scant and vague. The fans seem more concerned with recent damage caused by some unknown entity. There is a 15-page narrative of how a man built this beautiful house for his lovely, sweet wife who did nothing wrong, but nothing about why the house is in shambles now. A market on the outskirts of Caissa lost 30,000 colle’s worth of food, but the writer neglects to explain what happened to the food. All you know is that this person stayed up all week taking inventory and now it has gone to waste.
Sharing letters with each other might give you a clue on where to start your investigations and figure out which areas were hit the hardest. Or you can talk about how cute your adoring fans are. One way or another, you’ll have to get tongues wagging to make any progress. Unfortunately, Blanc isn’t going to save itself and from the sound of it, this problem is bigger than expected...

TWO ♟ Distant Howling
After pooling information, the new objective is clear: to investigate the damages. The vast, vibrant fields around Caissa seem a good place to start. They are mostly empty, but here or there you will see some people from nearby smaller villages and farms. The villagers will admit to having seen threatening shadows move over the fields and having heard harsh, high-pitched howling. They are willing to point Heroes toward possible shadow sightings, but are otherwise reluctant to act as guides. They are simple townsfolk who wish to return to their quiet lifestyle.
You may come up with small settlements (e.g. villages, farms, inns, taverns, etc.) as they are considered minor locations.
Heroes will soon discover that some of the smaller villages have been burned down entirely. The smell of ash and charred wood is thick in the air, though some buildings are also smashed as as though by something large and heavy. Nearby trees which haven’t been uprooted or knocked over are scorched and their blackened branches crackle ominously in the breeze. There are large marks dug deep into the ground and—is that a cow? Heroes will find tagged fruit cows scattered everywhere, scared, confused and mooing sadly next to their dead fruit cow friends. Fruit cows are usually found in Gresser, how strange...
A couple of days’ worth of exploration may help you realize that whatever is terrorizing Blanc doesn’t only devour hapless animals. While trying to navigate the numerous backcountry roads and farmlands, Heroes may stumble upon some gruesome clues: a charred limb—or what’s left of it; teeth, half-eaten ribcages, melted jewelry, and other smaller bits; the less fortunate may actually trip over a corpse staring unseeingly into the sky. It has been gutted, half-roasted, and seems to have lain in the sun for some time; and if someone is brave enough to roll the body onto its stomach, they may discover claw marks on its back. The victim must have tried to flee from something.
The amount of damage grows the more our Heroes travel south. What could be awaiting them?

THREE ♟ Breath of Fire
Let’s put the clues together. Fire? Check. Claw marks? Check. Large shadows seemingly from something flying overhead? Check and check. Congratulations, Blanc, you are suffering from a dragon plague.
It will take several days for the Heroes to locate the source of the rumors. The dragons seem to have taken up residence in the hilly area near Caissa, where the slopes grow steeper and then drop suddenly off into cliffs. The beasts are quite willing to greet guests warmly: there’s nothing like a burst of dragonfire and a deafening screech to brighten your day.
The only warning you’ll get before they launch themselves into the air and at Heroes is the sound of trees bursting beneath their claws. Beware: a single swipe can cause some serious damage and their fire breath, fast, frequent and garnished with the occasional, boiling hot drop of saliva, is nothing you want to stick around for. The dragons cannot be reasoned with, nor can they be tamed. A queen’s Charm magic WILL NOT work. Should someone try and reach out with their senses to see if the dragons are somehow hurting, they will only feel something alien and terrible.
Heroes aren't the only ones suffering under the dragons’ claws, unfortunately. Scattered around the area are a few small and isolated farms, and the animals and the farmers are easy prey and unlikely to flee in time. Heroes will want to intervene before the dragons can devour and destroy. If they are too late, they will need to provide support. Put out fires, heal the injured, catch panicked cows before they become pot roast! The dragons might be coming around for another attack, so it would be a good time to test barriers and other damage control skills.
To make matters worse, Blanc’s weather has decided that now is the perfect time for a hailstorm. It’s barely anything at first, beginning with small kernels the size of corn here and there to wet the grass and ruin your footing. Then it becomes much larger and greater in number. Dragons are not exempt from this hailhole: large enough pieces may rip holes in their wings! Heroes may want to use this to their advantage; additionally, casting ice and wind spells will suddenly become a lot easier, and the dragons will struggle to navigate in the stormy weather, forcing them to land more often. Better get up on that dragon’s back!
In the end, survivors of the dragon horde let out one last, collective shriek before they turn southward. The battle has been won, but the war is just beginning: the dragons have only been chased away. Their nest seems to be elsewhere and that is a worrying prospect. Dragons aren’t native to Blanc, which can only mean one thing…
Meanwhile, a new job opening has appeared at Gresser. At least you finally know what to do with all those fruit cows.

Naruto is no stranger to taking on an opponent that seems to outmatch him in every way, but he's also acutely aware of his missing chakra here and with it the knowledge that he can fight- he'll just have to do it differently. In the moment- with chunks of ice bearing down on them and the chaos of battle stretching out on either side, Naruto's still stuck on that's a dragon.
Or at least, he was stuck on it, until the guy on his right just started running????]
What the hell are you doing'attebayo?! [One day when he looks back on this, he'll begrudgingly admit that he's shrieking.] You're like this big compared to that thing!
no subject
[ He yelled back at the guy yelling at him, not even trying to look back as he charged the dragon with his sword. ]
I'm going to make it pay for the dead villagers!
no subject
[Call it a sense of responsibility, Naruto can't just sit by while someone else goes running into a fight- especially when he isn't right there running with them. Naruto kicks up after him, chasing the guy down for the express purpose of tackling him into the ground. Taking on a monster like that isn't impossible, but even Naruto recognizes that they can't just charge it head-on.]
no subject
I suggest you fucking let me go before you regret it, shrimp!
[ BOY WHAT A FIRST IMPRESSION THIS IS. ]
no subject
You don't stand a chance against that thing, you gonna try and get eaten so you can choke him to death?!
no subject
That sounds as good as an idea as starting a fight in front of a fucking dragon, dumbass!!!
no subject
[That said, if he has to punch this kid into submission in order to drag him to safety, that's a price he's willing to pay. But acting like a pair of howler monkeys is doing approximately nothing to help them and instead is just focusing the dragon's attention on them more with each passing second.
And that, is when the fire starts.]
no subject
HEY, BLONDIE, I SUGGEST YOU COVER YOUR FUCKING EARS FOR YOUR OWN GOOD!
[ With that, Shinn's going to pull the leather bound book attached to his belt using a clip, and opens it.
If Naruto didn't heed Shinn's warning, well: ]
I could feel it in my heart as he disrobed before me, giving me an ample view of his chiseled chest, glistening like marble due to his sweat; That he was the one for me and that I really want him to beat me like the guilty prisoner I am.
[ The words are bad enough as it is, but if Naruto actually listened to the word being said by a crochety old man trying to sound like a turned on girl, he's going to feel himself actually weakening.
AT THE SAME TIME, THE DRAGON SEEMED TO BE ROARING IN PAIN. ]
no subject
He's not sure how the book is supposed to help, but he's pretty sure that having his hands clamped over his ears has something to do with it. The dragon starts screeching and for just a moment, Naruto is reminded of the time he and Sakura-chan had bested Kakashi with a copy of Icha Icha.
...Does this mean the dragons can read? Forget it he's not even going to try unraveling that one. Naruto raises his voice, bellowing in an attempt to be heard over- whatever's happening.]
DOES THIS MEAN IT'S WORKING OR ARE YOU JUST PISSING IT OFF?
no subject
[ fuck he hates this already. ]
WE'RE GOING TO GET THE HELL AWAY FROM IT.
[ The book continues cranking out awful purple prose lines as the dragon locks up and starts falling down!
Thankfully between both teens rather than on top of one of them, and right then and there Shinn passes the huge curved sword on his back by... throwing it at Naruto. ]
USE THIS!
no subject
Naruto grabs it on reflex, finding the hilt in midair and sprinting forward the moment Shinn says the word. The throat is the only reasonable place to go if they're going to try for a killing blow and he doesn't know how much time they have before it recovers. Even so, his target isn't immediately in reach and for that reason Naruto has to climb up onto its body, but once he's there he plunges the blade in with the whole of his weight behind it. Once it's sunk as deep as it'll go, Naruto takes the hilt in both hands and goes running towards the other boy- dragging the blade on his way and with it, slitting the beast's throat.]
no subject
But there's still a lot of them flying, and they will definitely take notice of their fallen brethren in a short moment.
Shinn, having closed the book, looked about close to collapse in relief, but he knows that staying here is a bad idea. ]
Come on, let's get the hell out of here.
no subject
[Naruto isn't actually complaining, he's just- vocal. Vocal is a word. He passes the sword back as soon as they're in reach of one another. It was certainly helpful in the fight, but Naruto has always had a preference for close range- hand to hand and a kunai if need be. A sword has always been Sasuke's or Sai's thing.
He's quick on Shinn's heels as they put as much distance between themselves and the corpse as possible, and Naruto looks back over his shoulder as they go. Maybe they'll be lucky and there'll be too much going on on the ground for the other dragons to notice right away? They need some kind of cover either way, and that means they need to look for other people.]
I can't believe you pulled out a weapon like that when it got dangerous and you still charged right at that thing in the first place. What're you gonna do about the rest of 'em?!
no subject
[ Taking the sword back with nary a thanks, he's going to keep on walking. Honestly, trying to save someone just because the kid thought he was getting into deep shit without thinking twice.
Well, he was right, but he had a plan! A dumb one, but still a plan! And that's better than nothing! ]
no subject
But he also knows a stupid plan when he sees one.]
And anyway what were you gonna do once you used that book on a whole bunch of 'em, take them all out yourself?
no subject
[ Judging from the slight pause Shinn gave, it's clear that he gave a few thoughts on his stupid as fuck plan, but then he still decided to go with it anyways. ]
Or at the very least, take out enough for the next group of people so they have an easier time.
no subject
You make it sound like you were fine dying in the process.
no subject
[ It's clear that even if Shinn's reasons are heroic in the surface, he's still fine with just letting himself die for the sake of others. ]
no subject
And Naruto can't stand the sound of it.
His fist collides with the side of the guy's head with force that would send a lighter man flying.]
no subject
And well, his already frayed temper is set off yet again. ]
THE FUCK WAS THAT FOR!?
no subject
[Shinn's temper may be set off, but so is Naruto's, and his blood is boiling. He's already covered the ground between them and reaches for the guy's collar, intent on hauling him back up to his feet.]
Is your life so worthless you can throw it away so easily? Don't you have anything worth protecting?! Your comrades here are counting on your strength, how can you let them down so easily?! Once you're dead, you won't be able to help anyone!
no subject
[ He pretty much just gets hauled up with no resistance, but his words are just spat at the boy's face. ]
If I'm dead, then that's how it's supposed to be! We're all soldiers here, so it's only normal to die for the people you protect!
no subject
His fingers tighten in the fabric of the guy's shirt, leaving them a hair's breadth apart and trembling with rage.]
I'm your comrade!
[Because he is. Because they're here in this impossible situation together, fighting in this war that isn't their own. Naruto doesn't need to know anything else about him to accept this as fact, and that's why he's furious.]
And just because you're ready to give up doesn't mean I'll let you! If the people you want to protect matter to you at all, you wouldn't ever accept death so easily!
no subject
[ Did he just say that he's his comrade...!? What a load of bull, they've only fought together once and he already can say those kind of things with that kind of confidence!?
It's as if he's talking to a stubborn comic book hero or something. ]
And don't talk as if you're a fucking goody two shoes! Can you really say those kind of bullshit without even knowing what kind of person I really am? Can you honestly say that about everyone here and mean every word of it!?
[ BECAUSE HE SURE AS HELL CAN'T. ]
no subject
It doesn't matter who you were before you came here. [His voice quiets, and not once does he flinch from the accusations.]
We're in this fight together. We're trying to make sure what the dragons did doesn't happen again. It's obvious it hurt you.
Say whatever you want about me, but I'm not gonna let you die doing something stupid. If you wanna protect them, then stay alive to do it.
(no subject)
